Default Metal Flakes Found...

Did an oil change today on my 2006 997. When cleaning off the drain plug I noticed the magnetic end was glazed over with metal flakes a little smaller than the size of glitter. I cut open the oil filter and found roughly 10 similar sized metal flakes in it.

By chance I had my old filter from my previous oil change so I cut that one open as well and that one had maybe 6-8 flakes in it. In the past I have sent samples out to Blackstone all of which came back clean. I have not sent out the last 2 changes and had not been splitting open oil filters due to clean readings from Blackstone Labs so this might be normal?

So my question is, should this be a Red Flag or is it okay to have small amounts of metal in the oil. To be clear these are not metal shavings, there are no shapes or real size to what I am seeing. Just very small sparkles. I reached out to 2 of my indy shops, waiting to hear back from one. The other said as long as my oil filter didn't have a ton of flakes in it then its nothing to be super alarmed by. Just looking for further opinions. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry.

What oil?
Drain interval?

Restart your Blackstone Labs UOAs.

Awesome. Thanks for the link to the thread. The OP in that thread had a very similar looking filter as mine and seems all is well. I appreciate the quick educated responses. Thanks again!

I also got my oil changed 1K miles after just to make sure (came out clean) and started a blackstone account.

good luck and keep us posted!
