Default Your opinions/experience. 997.1 vs 997.2...tip vs pdk, engine vs engine

From what I have read we have two choice (leaving out manual transmissions). The last of the ims engines (with almost zero failures) mated to a tiptronic vs the new non ims engines with the pdk. In one model we have the imperfect motor, in the other the non-serviceable uber high tech transmission. If the 997.1 motor or the 997.2 trans breaks, either way the owner is looking at a very expensive bill.

The 997.1 motor carries the curse of Porsche Motor Sports saying the engines aren't fit for serious motor sport. But I'd like to hear owners' track experience with pure stock versions of the motor. I'd also like to hear track experience with pdk...how many overheating warnings are actually experienced in stock boxes in street cars on the track.

Everything you asked is beating a dead horse as its been discussed forever.
What I can say is I've never had my Pdk overheat even in 100 degree autocross day in Oklahoma to 90 degree track day at Portland raceway...

John, are you thinking of getting out of your second 996 and into your second 997?

I kinda like his question..... Hey, I had two engine failures, this type of analysis interests me. Granted it is a bit morbid and not positive, but.... whatever, it is legit.

Peace

Please let others give him answers to his good questions.

I'm happy with my 2000 996 cab...and I bought it because it was the best example I could find at the time...at the price I wanted to spend. In the last seven months I have seen prices change (logically) and I am now finding some very nice examples in 2008 and 2009 coupes (which I prefer over a cab).

My first 997 (2006) I was not happy with...except I did like the hp, brakes and tiptronic...in fact I was very impressed with the tiptronic. From what I've read and seen the 2008 has some nice improvements over the '06. And the tiptronic is a work horse that has great service options.

As for the 997.2...I love what I read about the engine...but find the PDK to be an all or nothing kind of technology. We are just now getting into serious mileage with this transmission...but we are still stuck w/ the factory in terms of service and repair. Basically, complexity equals fragility.

I used to flog my 993 with no concern for fagility. I'm leaning to think the 997.1 is more that kind of car...while the 997.2 (aleast with the PDK) I am not sure about. Which is why I'm looking for opinions and experiences here. I'm not that interested in daily driving experiences about going to work or out for cars and coffee on Sunday. I want to hear from people who have really leaned on these cars...in stock configuration...and find out their points of view.

If looking at old threads could answer this question that would be fine, but yesterday's or last years information should always be updated.

Beaten to death topic... 997.1 more mechanical, 997.2 a bit less with more electronics across the board including transmission. Improvements in areas, but changes that may make things less serviceable like older cars, if that's what you're looking for.

What are your miles and how do you use it? What transmission? Did you chose AWD because of your climate and geography? Do you track the car? Have you modified it? Etc.

Time changes the context of facts. A conversation two years ago about a car with 25k miles is not the same as a conversation today about a car with 100k miles.

I've had my 997 GTS for a bit over 3 months. It has SPASM, sport chrono, and PDK.
I drove it at Atlanta Motorsports Park all weekend this past weekend. It was about 85-90 out during the day. I drove the car in 4-5 sessions on track per day. I was driving it pretty hard as well. About 115mph in the back straight (into turn 1)..

Car performed flawlessly. PDK was a peach. Had no issues at all. Drove it 230 miles home to Charlotte directly after my track day on Sunday.

I have 9,100 miles on the car since my purchase in March.. and PDK has been fine. It will shift with a bit of "thud" when the car is cold. But once warm, it's seamless. No feedback on the tip since I haven't driven one.
