Default Poll: Scored cylinder failure for your 997, Y or N? tell us (yr, 997.1 or 997.2)

Many have been asking to understand how many of the 997 cars have had Bore Scoring failures or cylinder related related failure normally associated with the water cooling system being inadequate or cylinder liner being made of Lokasil. The failures could be due to the water cooling system being inadequate at times, cylinder liner being made of lokasil, or tolerances between piston and cylinder being too tight not taking into account of expansion differences that occur during cold (winter) weather.

List of potential damage can be inclusive of:
- scored cylinders
- scored pistons
- cracked cylinders, D-chunk
- etc etc

Although the people on this board are not necessarily a random sampling of 997 owners it would be interesting to see how many have experienced these failures. A friend just has his engine go and knowing there's a poll for IMS, I think this is a more alarming concern for 997 owners.

Please vote only once for each 997 you own (yes or no).. you can post multiple times but only vote once.

Please include details of your car and engine if it failed (997.1 or 997.2) and when.

Please let us know if there were any mitigating factors (smoke on start-up, increased oil consumption, increased knocking or lifter sounds, etc) that might have led to the failure.

Let us know if your car is a warm climate car, cold climate car, daily driven or weekend cruiser and how much mileage is on it.

Please post only for your car, no hearsay or posting for a friend who doesn't frequent the board.

Please post what was done to rectify the failure if your engine failed (CPO engine, engine out of pocket, used engine, sold, insurance fire, pushed it into a river etc).

Hopefully this will help owners and soon-to-be owners get a sense of how frequently this occurs.

If you could post about it, and I can add it to the 996 thread I created....that would be a bonus.

Interesting.... you should note something like "for those that had the car inspected - scoped...."

Yes 997.1 but no failure. It came up on the ppi but very minor I have been using the car now and no smoke or oil burning.

997.1S '05, 30k miles / 50k km

NEVER driven in winter or cold weather, NO random 1 or 2 day drives during dry winter days (avoiding unnessary cold starts), only start up the car in spring when 7 degree celsius for a few days... then typical driving for 6 months during warm+hot summer months.

no signs.

Recent bore scoring failure at 78k kms
2006 997.1 in Toronto
DD and winter driven for 4 years
has seen track time but not extensive
used as a commuter but also for long drives like the recent Hershey trip

exploring options now

Cam, u r going to make me relive this experience through this poll

'05 3.6L just over 60K mi. Car has lived its entire life in hot, tropical climate, driven daily, never tracked, always driven gently (upshifts at 3Krpm) until oil temp over 175-180, oil and filter every 6 months, all other regular maintenance by the book, always gassed with 93 octane at the corner Chevron.

I'm not sure how to answer the poll question, because technically I did not have scoring of the bore itself, just on the piston skirts, which is a precursor to eventual bore scoring.

i believe cam will be updating the poll to include any all sort of cylinder/piston related damage associated with

- the water cooling system being inadequate at times
- cylinder liner being of lokasil
- tolerances between piston and cylinder being too tight not taking into account of expansion differences that occur during cold (winter) weather.

he will be adding the list of potential damage inclusive of
- scored cylinders
- scored pistons
- cracked cylinders, D-chunk
- etc etc

perhaps there should be another option up there for those who are aware they have a (relatively mild) issue of some sort; but car still drivable without issues (such as in BenZ case)... this way the poll takes more into effect real life usage and is a little less black and white.

Engine was replaced by previous owner on 5/14 due to bore scoring @ 24k miles. Other previous owners located in the midwest and Alaska and I've got no information on how the car was driven or during what season.

Engine runs great now and I've sent 2 oil samples to Blackstone and have gotten good results.

MY05 997.1 C2 74,000km Weekend car, warm climate, driven year round.

No issues AFAIK -no / negligible oil consumption between oil changes.

2006 C2S; 90K kms

Never winter driven by me. I owned this car for 3 yrs, so I don't know if prev owner drove winters. Noticed abnormally high oil consumption in Sept 2015. Changed oil immediately. Drove till Nov, no probs. Put her away for winter. Start up in March 2016 (about 5 deg celcius) and started noticing white smoke from passenger side exhaust. Turns out to be D-chunk cylinder 1. From my non-professional visual inspection, I didn't see any sign of scoring, so I'm not sure how to vote here. Edit: I voted "Yes, 997.1".

Not to nitpick but the 9A1 engine in the 997.2, same for this purpose as your 991 engine, has a cylinder liner made of alusil, which, thus far, has proved less prone to failure than the lokasil liners of the M96/M97 engines. Further, the cooling system was completely revamped for the 9A1 engine which also curtailed many of the cooling related problems associated with the older engines. While it is not my thread, I would suggest adding more specify to either the polls or the failure modes because the thread as it exists today is addressed much more towards the .1 than the .2 cars.

What do you suggest is added to the thread for 997.2's and the DFI engine?
