As a counter point here I generally take my "special" 2009 Ford Escape to malls, busy parking lots and places where I just don't generally know the parking situation. Why? Because I don't care about it. We bought it for next to nothing when Ford was having problems and it's my I don't care car. Ironically, even though it street parks, hauls everything and parks anywhere..no dings. Usually it's dirty, dusty and covered with sand from hauling diving gear or kayaks to and from the beach.

Anyway, I parked it next to a Mclaren 570s at my local grocery store on Sunday. I specifically parked it there to block anyone from damaging the Mclaren. I even cleared the shopping cart in the space next to his car. Owner runs out of the store and starts screaming at me not to park next to him. I show him my phone - Lambo, Porsche and Shelby group shot of my cars and tell him why I parked there and point to the cart I cleared. Sheepish apologies ensued.

Moral of the story - Not everyone that parks next to you is trying grief you.

Too funny. At that point, I wouldn't have shown him jack. I would have laughed at him and walked into the store. What a douche canoe.

Yea, I briefly considered that. Figured he would feel more stupid if he understood what had transpired.

LA is a really weird place sometimes with people that are extremely self centered and tend to over react because they think everyone's motivations are self centered. Sometimes it's nice to break that trend

Sigh... A lot of unnecessary agita and nasty comments here.

No, I wouldn't "do" anything either, but in defense of the OP, this has happened to me on several occasions (pull into a nearly empty lot, park someplace with no cars in a 10-20 spot radius around me, FAR from the entrance, and come out to find some ******* has parked within 8 inches of my door -- doesn't matter which side).

Unless they've damaged my car, I just shake my head and walk away, but there is absolutely no mistaking it, that person is a massive *******. Period. (I don't buy for a second that they were trying to "protect" my car. That's plain silly. That's "f*ck you Mr. nice car" parking.)

Sadly the world has a lot of ******...

Please tell me you have all seen this BMW vs. truck parking story, in which the BMW takes two spots, so a truck forces his way in, but the BMW douche takes a bat to the truck... then brags about it, saying his paint was all new and nice, so he deserved two spots. Parking lot drama gold:

"Ultimate-Level BMW Asshat Double Parks, Takes Bat To Pickup Truck"

The problem with the truck/BMW example is there were TWO asshats involved, and that makes things exponentially more difficult.

OP was NOT an asshat, although it appears he was considering being an asshat and coming here for an "attaboy." Well, attaboy for not being an asshat, and BAD! for considering it. Although it's unfortunate you were tempted toward the Asshat side, it's excellent that you made the right decision. For the others subsequently volunteered to share their own asshattery, well, thanks for publicizing it. Good to know.

OP, your point about this occurring in Texas is a good one. I make it a point to NEVER escalate a situation if my wife is involved, and I'm sure you do the same thing when your kid is in the car...you definitely don't want to poke a borderline crazy guy on the wrong day...

Whenever someone cuts me off or does something else guaranteed to send me through the roof, my wife - in her most soothing could-talk-a-jihadist-out-of-thumbing-the-switch-on-his-vest voice - says "maybe he's on his way to the hospital," and while it's true that I'm thinking "I f**king HOPE he's on the way to the hospital," she helps me remember that I have no idea what's going on with that guy or why he's driving like an ***. So I try to shrug it off. The world is NOT a worse place when those of us who are probably entitled to some amount of being worked up decide instead to just let it go and give the other guy a pass.

When I'm really feeling the red mist, I make an effort to think back to the afternoon when she had to push me back into my car so I didn't kill a guy who REALLY deserved killing...he cut me off and shot me the finger in the parking lot of the grocery store where I was purchasing ice and beverages after my mother's burial on the way to her wake. When I start imagining where that could have led, it becomes easy to see how it's just better to try to let it go.

Wow, that Jalopnik article was an interesting read. I found the entire thing pretty disappointing much like some of the commentary in this thread. Willfully damaging someones property in order to teach them a lesson they'll probably never understand? That is a fool's errand. And say they come back to their car when they see you putting a few dings in it and do the same to your head. Someone ends up in the hospital or worse over a petty annoyance that could be rectified and forgotten in less then a minute. At the end of the day you get to drive home in an undamaged vehicle that inspired the jealousy in the first place.

I had an off-duty cop save me from a certain prison term when some ******* cut me off in a grocery parking lot, then repeatedly flipped me off and honked at me from his locked car. I've never been so out of my mind with anger. The cop witnessed it all from a table outside Starbux and, right when he knew I was about to break glass, he stepped in and talked me down. Showed his badge to the ******* in the car and told him to leave now. When I had a chance later to reflect on that day, I realized how foolish it was of me to react like that and how lucky I was it didn't turn out differently. I committed to never, ever doing that again. It's never, ever worth it.

Somewhat similar experience for me on one of my worst days and I also have my wife to thank for it not getting completely out of hand. Shrugging it off and going your own way costs very little. The price for taking the other route can be much higher.

wait was this thread seriously started by someone saying what would you do IF someone parked next to you and touched your car with their door, or am I insanely high and confused?

Did someone miss a "life lesson" opportunity for their child? Teaching them to respect people's property, good judgment, tolerance, and proper reaction to an unfavorable situation might have been 4 things that could have been taught. There are surely others. (Instead of anger due to some undeserved feeling of entitlement.)

It's a car. You parked it in a public parking lot. The world doesn't actually owe you squat...

We're in the same boat. I have a Grand Cherokee that I use for Home Depot and utilitarian runs. Hauls a ton of shi* and I could care less about dings. I'm actually the guy that squeezes into that spot in the middle of two cars crossing my lines. Because I can.
