Search the forum as ton of data here

997.1 is an amazing car on so many level and a tremendous value right now. 2005 IMO are the best value if the IMS/RMS has been addressed. Next is the 2006 with updated RMS etc. That said many believe it's an over hyped issue. Fast? Depends on what your coming from but 0-60 4.5 sec range is a decent number..... If u find a well kept car then yes they are reliable overall with a few things to keep an eye out for like any car. Pricing based on mileage, options and year (05-08) but 45-50k can get you a very nice car with low miles etc... 40-45 also can get you a great car... 35-40 more miles and likely less options (or basic color combo pretty stock build)
Best, most affordable, iconic, well built semi exotic like car on the market bar none. The word -Balance comes to mind when I think about the 997.1 cars overall; performance and drivability, Handling, power, braking, functionality, comfort, great interior and so much more. On the track, commute to work, around town...a 997.1 does it all.

Hope that helps...

Pull, pull!! I'm a 997.2S guy, but my only regret is not buying one sooner!
Good luck in the hunt and post pics when you bag your unicorn!

Also what's great about these and is that depending on what you want these cars come optioned in in so many different and some unique. A stock car (black on black) next to a car also black but with an aero package and red interior look like two different cars. Add some mods and can take it further or leave it stock and stay the purists path.... One of those cars that really cover a huge spectrum.

Please check the forum and don't get scared as there are lots of good 997.1's out there.

My recommendation is to go for a higher mileage car which has been maintained. If it has not failed yet, it is unlikely to fail than...

Look in the driver side exhaust pipe, if you see lots of sooth, considerably more than the pipe on the passenger, walk away as this most probably is a bore scoring issue. (or loud thicking noise on the passenger side of the engine). A little bit of sooth on both tips is no issue.

Fast, fast as you can handle the car. Everybody can drive fast in a straight line.

Price range from very cheap - with lots of (hidden?) problems to solve to a well maintained, reliable, well optioned car, 40 000 USD?

Be ware that an overhauled engine cost you at least 15000 USD so aim for a car with a good engine. Good is easy to detect by a PPI. If unsure, spend the few hundred dollar more for a boroscope inspection of the passenger side cylinder bank just to make sure the engine suffers from bore scoring.

Remember, if the price is very cheap, there is most of the time a reason behind.

If you can do maintenance yourself, this is a fun car where you can keep costs down. I like my 4S, have 82000 km on it and do all maintenance myself.

what causes the bore scoring?
Thats been beat like a rented goalie in here.....search and ye shall find. Has it been proven? Well, some data shows cars in cold climates that were not allowed to warm a up a bit seem to suffer its fate..other VAG cars do it too, Audi has bore scoring problems....

Some random thoughts... One person's opinions... Base engine is great but can (will) be an issue when you resell. My MY05 base 6MT is a pleasure to own and drive. Interior is spotless and still smells lightly of leather when I open the door in the morning. Nice. Make sure the "frunk" is dry as a bone unless you don't mind mildew smell. These cars eat rear tires. As more and MY09+ PDK cars come off lease I think 997 with tip will drop in value--no one ever got fired for buying a three-pedal 911. If you don't enjoy shifting at or above the redline why do you want a P-car? DME should show plenty of ignitions in ranges 1 and 2, some in range 3. Ranges 4, 5, 6 not so much. The stock radio in my Japanese sedan blows away the stock 997.1 radio. Believe it or not these cars draw attention--I was not expecting that and it is not always a plus. No spare tire--consider yourself warned. Aero doesn't work well with windows down in the rain. I am told that the 997 has rear seats... I haven't found them yet :-). Cayman is probably a better car in virtually every way--I just don't want one. Type F is probably inferior in every way but sure looks good to my eye. If you can tolerate the 996 front end (I can't) there are crazy bargains available.

I just saw what looks like a really nice one, low low miles (like 2,500) with a Ruznak plate on Bring a Trailer (.com) this morning. Looks like a great opportunity for a "new" 06 base carrera with MT - I think it's Guards Red with black interior.

If I were in the market for a base carrera with low miles, I would definitely have a peek at it.
