Default iPod and UART

So when I bought my 2005 997 the guy selling it did not know why there was an apple 30 pin cord and a usb cord in the glove box. So today I got curious. Plugged my kids iPod in it and now I have music playing from iPod. Not sure if I can change songs etc from PCM but hey it beats the hell out of the local crappy radio stations.

I need to buy an adaptor, 30 pin to lightening connector, if I plug this into my iPhone 5c will I be able to play music using my phone? Also I found a usb cord, plugged that into my laptop and it started downloading UART software.

Thoughts on what this might be for?

Thanks, please excuse my ignorance, not much of an electronic expert or novice

Where does this cable plug into?
How about a picture of the setup as it's working.

Both cables are in the glove box and then routed behind center console. Without taking the PCM out I am guessing that they are both connected to the PCM. When using the iPod I have to switch to CD and I have no control except for volume on the car system. To change songs, pause, play etc. all has to come from iPod.

Can you post a picture of the cable?

UART is a standard interface for a serial device. So the cable is probably a USB>Serial converter which would be used to interface with another electronic device.
