Question Tapping/slapping sound in the right side of engine area, is it normal?

Hi guys...

Recently I notice my car is making a tapping sound (or sounds like something is slapping), it can be heard when windows is down and most significantly in the garage. The noise is most audible when I go behind the RR wheel.

I made an video clip for it: http://1drv.ms/1KupOrx

Also a YouTube video here, but seems cannot display?

This is a new to me 2011 997.2 C2S. Just want some input before I got it to the dealer, or maybe no need to worry at all?

Thanks in advance,

Video didn't play for me. Only place you can have a good noise is from the tailpipes. Make sure oil level is OK, then if you are under warranty take to dealer. If not change the oil & inspect oil filter.

Sounds a little noisy like maybe a lifter but the DFI engines do make more noise from the injectors. Has the car sat for a long time? Was this engine warm or cold when running? Think that was the fan running in the video so I suspect it was a warm engine. I would take it to dealer just to make sure.

Thanks for the reply! This is a daily driver and the video is shoot when the engine is warm. But that noise comes in no matter it is cold or warm though.

Glad to know I am not the only one
Yeah I will take it to the dealer anyway, but now I am less worried. Thanks for the input guys!

If you are referring to the higher pitched "ticking" noise, that seems pretty common with the DFI engine. It happens on my 997.2 and my 957 (Cayenne).

Hmm, sounds exactly like my 2009 S so I think that is a good sign, but what do I know as I've had for 2 whole weeks.

Any update on the knocking/slapping noise on your motor?
Do you have any exhaust soot from the tips to rear bumper?

Nah, I just learnt to live with it. There is soot in the tips though, but not as much to make it to the bumper.

Is the soot even on both tips? Or is one side dirtier than the other? Even is goo. Uneven especially on the left could be another symptom (the exhaust crosses over from right to left under the car).

Not in the 997.2, from what I understand.

Correct, well, sort of.
The 997.2 center muffler at the rear keeps the sides separate - see cutaway picture.

Of course if you have rear X pipes installed such as Sharkwerks or Billy Boat this is no longer true :-)

semicycler - curious as to what's indicated by more soot on the left?
Understand more on one side could be indicative of bore scoring in the engine but looking to learn more from you here.
Thanks!
