Agree with the OP, the 997 is the perfect car. I plan on keeping my 997.1 indefinitely.

Since hitting 80k the following has gone out:
- Starter
- Water pump
- Brakes
- Rear window regulator, it's a cab and every time the top goes down, so do the windows
- Plus the normal maintenance items, 2 rear tires & oil change

I now have 83k, it's been a tough year, so far.

No shame in worn shocks, just not something I had budgeted for.

Bilstein will rebuild for a reasonable price but I decided to skip the downtime and buy a new set. I still haven't sent the olds in for refurb.

Given the car's life of bouncing off the rev limiter, I don't think there's anything outrageous about the work I've had to do. And prices through my indy have all been reasonable. Hell, my Tacoma alternator (HD version) costs about the same as the new Bosch unit on the 911. And I could have saved more with a rebuilt one.

Just did the 90,000 mile oil change in the wife's 2005 997.1 C2S. No odd or expensive issues that haven't been covered here (starter cable, water pump, plugs & coils, brakes, tires, etc), but by the stiff feel of her clutch, we might be getting close to that - already have a spare in the parts cabinet.

70K+ on my '06 C2 (since new) - often think that the joy of ownership clouds my view and what is and is not reasonable - I often hold that the car has been care free... but I've done the following

Water Pump
Serpentine belt
Front struts
Coil packs
Plugs*
brakes / rotors (due this spring)*
shifter cables
tires*
Wipers*

Matt

* - Wear item

Now I'm looking at a 997.2. My plan would be to "drive it 'till the wheels fall off". So I'm wanting some feedback on how these cars have been holding up. 100k mi. 150k mi. 175k?

Anyone know or have experience with really higher miles with these engines, etc?

It may still be a little early to know. They're not old cars and it doesn't appear that many have climbed on up into those kinds of milages yet.

Just thought I'd ask. Wanting a long term driver! My 2006 pick up has 120k on the clock and I trust it completely. Any reason a .2 shouldn't be just as durable?

Looking for a long-term relationship!

Thank you
David
David,
We have an "06 Carrara S with 54k miles and an "08 4S with 47k miles. The "06 had a weepy RMS at 35k; othwise just annual dealer maintenance.
I"d call that reliable. No internet gremlins.

That all sounds like standard maintenance to me.

2009 C2S 112k miles

High mileage, for me, doesn't start until 150k. You start analyzing when a car hits 100k miles..... Before this, you don't know much unless of course the car is crap.

Peace

Thank you

2006 C2, 100,500 miles. New clutch & RMS at 80K, New plugs, water pump, Tstat, coolant res, shocks, gear box oil, shift cables, SSK shifter & inner tie rods as preventative at 100K miles.

Only known failure was the gauge cluster at 75K miles.

It would be interesting to compare the 3.8 to the 3.6. From what I understand the 3.8 is a bit better built...

I would imaging - but open to being wrong - that with the exception of the short block and DME that the rest of the engine components (the parts that break - wear out etc.) would be the same....

When you say "better built" what specifically are you referring to?

Thanks

Matt

My buddy is a "master" Porsche mechanic working at a stealership, and a while ago he mentioned that to me. Now that I'm starting to get into the market for one, I'll ask him for more details.

I have been thinking of doing an engine out maintenance on my '05 997.1.

Plugs, coils, water pump, belt, AOS, clutch & slave & brg, maybe RMS, IMS brg, general looksy and cleaning.

Also anything in the engine bay thats easier to get to while the engine is out.

Not sure if the stars will allign and the mileage can get to the right spot before one or more of the above fail.

Anything I left out? "re-seal items"?
