I think it is pretty easy to make a good argument for the 997 being the greatest generation, although, I do believe the 991 is a spectacular car also.

Another stupid "Top pick a number" from Total 911. Their feature articles are reasonably good. But their internet content leaves a lot to be desired. When you think about it, there is no "best generation of the 911." Each generation has its highs and lows. Certain cars stand out more than others in each generation. It's funny they left the IMS out of that top 7...

If you scroll down to the next article that compares the 997 to the 991, you'll see that the author prefers the 991.

A typical question asked might be "which 911 should I purchase"? The standard answer for along time has been, "buy the latest one you can afford" The year typically doesn't enter the equation.

That is the best 911, the latest one you can afford. As far as performance, the latest one is always the best 911.

I am not so sure about this.... define "performance". The classic American buyer (note I did not write "enthusiast") hits the gas at a green light and goes "Ooooooo" and that is about it. GM, Ford et al know this and that is why American products were all straight line performers for most of our history.

I suspect many here value, on an emotional level, the infamous 0-60 statistic most when it comes to performance. It is all about the drag race.

I don't value performance like this. It has taken me years of driving to develop an deeper understanding and I value:

1 - Low weight
2 - Wide and short wheelbase
3 - Low and centered point of gravity
4 - Others but I need to get to my point......

By the top three above, the newest Porsches fail miserably. They are fat, heavy cars with detached steering. Sorry, not a true sports car in my book. They are fantastic GT cruisers, and if you are looking for a "high performance GT cruiser" then maybe they really are fabulous high-performance machines.

It depends on what you value as performance. If you are wondering what I value as a high performance sports car, a true sports car, give me a Lotus Elise SC..... but that is just me.

Soooo....... keeping to the Porsche family, I suspect the last generation of the most mechanical Porsche was the best, highest performance car. Unfortunately, I can only speculate as I never drove one, but I lust after their lightness and apparent maneuverability. To me, that is high performance! (And the most FUN!)

Peace

***waiting for 991 people to come in here dropping elbows about their nicer interior, more power, better chasis, super legit engine fans, skynet self aware programming features*** lol

I love my 997. I can't see selling it in the future for a 991. Maybe a 997 gt3... But I will always have a 6mt 911 in my life and the 997 is perfect for that.

I'm currently doing my own spark plug swap and how comfortable would I feel doing that in a 991? I'm not too sure. I feel like I can keep the 997 and DIY on repairs/upgrades forever. A car I finally fell in love with. By the way...this is the first car I actually DIY on almost everything. I'm loving it!

Everybody has their best 911. I had a 991 and went back to a 997; for me it is the best. Many people disagree. It's like arguing which is the best color.

For me, the 997 is the pinnacle (thus far). Others would disagree but I am perfectly content with a 997 c2.

I loved my '96 993 and I love my '07 997. How can there be a best anything without a standard, common metric?

I bought the 997.2 over a 991. Given it was comparing a 4s to a 991 base with Sport Chrono at the time, with sport exhaust etc. I can't get over the look of the 991 its just so fat.. and it just lacked rawness.
Im not a 991 fan but I also think the 993 is the best Porsche not the 997.2. So to each there own..
Now the 991.2 Im ready to see! The .2 is always better than the .1.

Think of the turbo's and the aftermarket support...its going to be like the 996 turbo all over again!

Any of the water cooled Mezger powered Porsches are the best Porsches. True racing pedigree traced all the way back to 962's and capable of 1200 HP on stock internals.

It will probably get fatter……..like a chick that used to be hot, put on weight…..and still thinks she is hot. I doubt the 991.2 or what ever comes after the 991 gets smaller. With the Cayman GT4, the 911 is doomed to be a fat GT car from now on.
