Default Race pipes on a 997

A coworker suggested trying straight pipes for a very aggressive sound on the 3.8 first gen. (No emissions here in FL)

Anyone hear it in person?

It will definitely sound bad ***!! But, it WILL be very loud and you WILL get drone at certain RPM ranges. It'll scream up top! Let me know if I can help

Emissions are EPA federal standards and so are noise limits. States can and do add their own stricter standards in, like in California with the hated CARB police. You will get tired of straight pipes or wear ear plugs after a while, and you wife or GF will hate riding in it. Which is good at times...so you can go have fun and not bring her with you to complain about your driving too fast.

Don't do it.

I know I'm getting old, but it really is pretty insufferable.

I'm designing an exhaust that's similar in fit and function to muffler bypass pipes, but it should be quieter. If only I had the time to actually *build* it ...

It's too loud.

It doesn't even sound good. Our cars don't have a super-high redline. It's just ... Too loud.

It's about as unpleasant as a decatted, de-resonated Honda Civic with an "N1 Style" (read: Fartcan) muffler.

Carmichael has it right. Don't do it unless you like drone, going deaf, being hated, and losing a lot of low end torque in the process. It's easy for other people to suggest you screw up your car and image. Is this coworker a true friend or someone who would enjoy seeing you embarrassed?

Don't do it unless your car is for high RPM use on a track only - and then bring ear protection.

I'll admit I just wanted you to do it out of morbid curiosity so I could read about it here.

Here is an admittedly bad video of my car on bypass pipes on Lower Wacker drive, about a year ago.

My fiancee wouldn't have agreed to tape this, or be a passenger in my car, if we weren't on our way to Lawry's Prime Rib.

The only good thing that came out of this was I could tell if the valet was abusing the car or not. It was so. Freaking. Loud.

I ran around w/o cats and it was loud and smells. Straight pipe will probably be louder and will get annoying very quick. I wouldn't do it.

on our '07 GT3, we have no mufflers, just the Sharkwerks pipes straight out from the cats. Loud, howls, snarls, pops, crackles, shrieks, sounds just awesome. But my wife won't ride in our car, and I wear ear plugs. You may really upset your neighbors with such a system. But coming from a Supeformance 427 Cobra replica with unmuffled sidepipes, I am fine with it.

But not for every body.

All the best...

Doesn't every Floridian have a back up gun?
Straight pipe? I would be getting too much unwanted attention. And not by the ladies.
Straight pipe = Track only
My local track even restricts run times of open exhaust cars.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Coworker is yanking your exhaust. Don't listen to him.
