What is your favorite radar detector?

Advanced
i use the 9500 and I do love the gps lockout feature.
I have escort live but at least in my area not enough users yet.
I am a firm believer in Waze, as there are many users and not just LE reports but road hazards ect.

V1, for those who want the best instrument. Anything else does not measure up.
The current V1 (updates are available) has fully controllable false alarms. You need to get the bluetooth option and a smart phone app to easily set up and control the detector's operating profile.

V1 is old hat. Passport Max2 is the way to go. Who needs directional indicating? If you care that much about speeding up the second the threat is gone you don't need a detector, you need a jammer.
Max2 has GPS learning, downloadable updates that take 2 minutes to install and a community based tagging system that shows speed cameras, red light cameras and speed traps.
It also auto-tags false alarms. For example, drive by an Ipass reader that sets off your detector two to three times and it stores the location so as not to alert the next time.
If you drive in ANY medium to large city, Max2 is the detector to have.

In my experience, the Escort 9500ci is not only equal to the V1, but in a number of ways, superior.
That being said (and as has been been mentioned numerous times elsewhere on RL), situational awareness is your other best friend when stepping over the legal speed limit.

I'll contend that there is no substitute for a car-mounted detector though, especially on the more engaging and less traveled back roads and twisties.

I use an Escort red line in my air cooled and my 997.2 has a 9500ci. Really like the built in install. Last night I got a warning so far in advance ( 2 miles) I thought it was a false alarm except it was Ka which is always a cop. Used a 9500ix before and really like it. The GPS lock out function works very well.

Only V1 tells you the direction of the threat in a single portable detector.

When using your smartphone to hook your detector into the Escort Live network, all of the higher end Escorts not only tell you the direction but the location and detection radius of the threat once any one detector on the road picks it up. Laser as well as radar. Stop light cameras too. Here are some example images (older reports fade from red to orange to yellow based upon the settings you provide). Manual reports are supported too with a quick two-tap sequence denoting the type of report.
Note that you can use Escort Live for free but you need one of the detectors to get the full integration and alerts on the detector as well as the phone.
Personally I found all of the false alarms on the V1 rendered it nearly useless in a suburban environment... and I didn't find it useful to know if the store door opener was in front or behind of me. (I do think they both have their advantages based upon your particular needs and environment though).

I love the built in feature of the Escort. I love the arrows on the V1.
Waze is my savior but does not work on the back roads when out of network range (for either warnings or navigation). Waze depends upon crowds (which we have in the SF Bay area). Waze has saved me more often than the V1.
I've found the the CHP in my travel path (to work each day) are watching traffic and not using radar (if I am to believe the V1). So situational awareness, a knowledge of local speed traps, and a general wariness around freeway exits runs a close second. But I wouldn't give up the detector!
Comparing advanced warnings during a recent group trip wherein we had V1 and Escort usage, it seems to me that the Escort gave better forewarning, or my POPt filter is holding back indications on me.
But as has been pointed out, the arrows let you see direction, and I do find that handy (yet I love the -expensive - built in option of the Escort). Bottom line, you can't go wrong with either of these.

StormRune ... Now if they'd just let the display interleave with Waze!!! YAV1 (Yet Another V1 app) claims to allow this, but I got tired of trying (it seemed intermittent and involved that much more set up time with each trip start) so I use just the remote V1 display mounted to the steering column (shuts off the main display mounted to the right of the rear view mirror) and wire it all to the OBD connector (auto turn on and shut off). No wires are seen, a sun shield hides the remote display to anyone not sitting in the driver's seat, the main display is dark and hides above the passenger's visor, and it is simple. And the phone gets used only for a one time set up. There is still a lot lacking in the apps IMHO. Don't get me started!!!
