The useful parts of a forum usually occur during the first 3 years of a new model. Thereafter the forum becomes a social site, occasionally funny, often frustrating in the type of questions asked and/or statements made. Interesting to see that evolution and the evolution in the type of owners.

I disagree. The 991 (and the GT4) forum right now has the feel of a shopping trip to the mall IMO. Comparing feature and functions and colour is boring to me. What I like about this forum is that as the cars age, you understand their true character. What mods make them better. Doing your own maintenance and experiences there. Etc.

Perhaps the previous comment is correct and that is the forum reflects the owners.... Those who enjoy the buying experience and latest and greatest vs those who are interested in getting their hands dirty with these amazing machines.

I'm the 4th owner of my 2005 C2S. My engine was replaced last years at 24k miles and it has almost 27k now so I guess I have a while before it gets fully broken in.

I spent 5 years in the 964 forum and I have to say it was the best online community I have ever participated in. People looked out for each other, lent strangers specialized tools and respected everyone's opinions. Sadly It has changed in the past year now that 964s have increased dramatically in value there is much more talk about values and pricing. Still a great place however.

Unlike the OP I'm very interested in mods, DIY and understanding the individual systems that make up the car. I think as these cars age and drop in value a new group of buyers will be buying and there will be an increased emphasis on tracking, DIY maintenance and upgrades. That would be my hope anyway.

I think it's awesome that enthusiasts like you are interested in working on these cars, and that you're able to work on them. I'm envious. I'm not able to do anything other than aesthetic work....some combo of not being raised around it, not being willing to invest the time and dollars needed, not having the time, and not being willing to fart around with such a valuable and precise piece of machinery. I'm sorry if my original thread seemed to denigrate anyone. Maybe someday when I have some time I'll be able to take on some diy projects, but right now it's a challenge to meet all of my family and work obligations.
But a guy has to drive to get from point a to point b, and I have done some track work over the years, and I still heel-toe every time I drive, so I still love Porsches (as well as many other fine marques,) and someday I hope to get back on a track. At this point, though, its more important for me to spend vacation time with my 9 year old, for whom I've missed way too much of her daily life than I care to admit.
Anyway, more power to you and those of you who have the time and know-how to get your hands dirty. I wish I could include myself in that group.
BTW, I just reread my original post and I didn't say anything about not liking it now. I just said it had changed. Sheesh. Don't read so much into things. One love, man.

2nd owner. Will be 2 yrs of ownership in September and CPO will end as well. Debating very hard how long should I keep the car. Only worry is having the car outside of warranty, although I never had a single issue with the car. But as people say, things always seem to start breaking down as soon as car is out of warranty...?

You may consider buying after market warranty. Do it before your CPO warranty expires so you gonna get lower quotes.

Not the original owner of my 997, after buying new cars for a very long time and watching my money disappear the first three years of ownership. My 997 was my first used car, brought it at half the original MSRP, CPO'ed and only 17K miles, after 5 years of ownership, I wouldn't lose much if I sold it today. I feel like I'm the original owner, my 997 still has a strong leather smell like when it's brand new from the factory. My friends always asked me if I am going to sell it, probably not unless someone offers me more than what I paid for, which isn't going to happen so I am happy to keep it forever.

Hey Selo,

I hope you didn't misinterpret my post as I was kind of agreeing with your sentiment of how forum focus does change over time. Sometimes it can drift away from our interests, like you with the 997 forum and me with the 964 forum. My hope is that the change in the 997 forums will move towards my personal interests of DIY maintenance and performance improvements. Time will tell but so far so good.

Yes this is pretty much my math too. I was comfortable with a used 911 cause it was always going to be our 2nd car and people tend to take great care of these cars. With 20k miles and "as new" condition I figured I was buying a car that was maybe 10-15 percent "used" yet 80-85 percent of the depreciation had taken place. That is good value in my mind. And short of an engine blowing (I have the .2), with such little depreciation, this just may turn out to be one of the most affordable cars I will own.

Not to get too detailed, but between both of my cars (the other is an A4 Avant) I have less than 3 percent of my net worth tied up in these depreciating assets. The other 97 percent is in appreciating assets. For me that makes the 911 easy to justify and even more enjoyable to drive.

2nd owner here. Car was originally purchased in Westchester, NY, and found its way to Livermore, CA, where my wife and I bought it. Original sticker $111,000, we paid $80K out the door including sales tax, license & reg, & CPO warranty (an additional 4 years, 50K miles). Car sales in Cali take about 11-12% over & above selling price. 19K miles when purchased, about 35K now (wife's DD, 44 mile round trip).

Bought my Atlas Grey w Special Leather Cocoa, X51 and Aerokit 2006 C2S from Beverly Hills Porsche in Jan 2006 after ordering and waiting 2 months, now has 23k miles and still going strong. Cost more than a GT3 which were not available at the time and i wanted the back seats.
