I don't understand why people do that. It's like driving a Porsche doesn't attract enough attention.

I normally count two or three that I see in the Loop, mostly Caymans or Panameras, but I've seen a handful of 911 drivers that do it as well.

"If you got it, flaunt it." Makes me cringe all the time.

Some people just like the way it looks. I personally do not do it - but I get it...

I used to do that when I first bought the car. Simply because I liked looking at it over the shoulder in the parking garage and seeing the wing - otherwise I'd never see it. Bought the car for myself not for what others think of it.

Lately though (6+years of ownership), I totally forgot that she has a wing. I'll have to check if it still works.

Personally, I prefer the look of the 911 with the spoiler retracted. I allow mine to work in automatic mode (I did this with my 996 C4S and with my 997 TT). It does seem a bit showy to me to leave the spoiler up, but so does a carbon fiber hood wrap or aftermarket LED daytime running lights.

Ultimately it's the owner's choice so my preferences don't matter to anyone but me. If you like the spoiler up, then go for it!

I believe the rear spoiler deploys at 74 mph or if the engine compartment reaches 140* or more. So some of the guys you see with the spoiler up at low speed could be because of the temp in the engine compartment.

I usually park mine with the spoiler up after a spirited run. Allows for a little better heat dissipation. Otherwise, auto mode.

I have deployed the spoiler after parking purely for my own visual pleasure.

Because I can.

My youngest son (11) thinks it's his job to put the spoiler up whenever we go for a drive. He thinks it makes a very cool car just a bit better looking...who can argue with that.

I've had my 997.2 for 3 weeks and can't confirm that the spoiler deploys automatically. You can't see it while you are driving. It does work when you hit the button.

People do what pleases them, but yes, it is a poseur thing.

For heat dissipation it is better to keep the lid down and allow the fan to work (if needed). The fan blow air from the top into the engine, not the other way around. The idea is to remove heat from the top plastic parts.

In the garage after a spirited drive one can open the engine lid and position a powerful fan on the floor in the rear pulling air from under the engine. This way cool air flows down from the top thorough the engine and out.

OK, I'll confess to deploying the spoiler manually during AX & DE events. Nothing to do with looks or cooling. For me it has to do with the spoiler going up and down over and over again and wearing out.

I've heard worries on this Forum about the rams failing or squeaking. On a spirited run we will be above 74 (spoiler up) and below 45 (spoiler down) multiple times. I figure put the spoiler up (manually) and be done with it. Fewer ups and downs means longer ram life in my mind. If I forget to lower it before I shut down, so be it. I believe the cooling fans work with the spoiler up or down, and the fact that the spoiler rises automatically if the engine gets too hot tells me Porsche believes up is better for cooling. Practical? Ram life extension? Cooling? Poseur? Take your pick, but I'm not going to hassle or question anyone's spoiler position. I'm just happy to walk down the street and admire another 911 should I be lucky enough to see one!!!

Actually I don't like the spoiler. I wish it wouldn't go up, but oh well.
