Thinking of picking up a 997
The buddy who used to work at local dealer, and who sold me my Spyder and Cayenne, is selling this car. I don’t really need another sports car. However, given that I know the seller and feel like this is a great price, I was thinking of adding it to the collection. I previously owned a 3.2 996 base Carrera and loved how light and tossable it was. I presume this car has similar driving dynamics. I’d probably need to do the IMS fix but otherwise he’s maintained it nicely. Any guidance or suggestions appreciated!

yeah sounds like a steal, considering knowing the owner, it's a no brainer if you don't already have a 911. still get a PPI and an over rev report though

IMS solution done. Nice. Thats 5k without clutch.
If a good shop did the work and everything checks out in PPI thats a great buy for someone.

Its got a roll cage and may have been tracked quite a bit. Better check brakes and suspension. Water pump and serpentine belt. You may have to address all of those items. That's an easy 5 to 6k.

I cannot help but to think that there are no free rides with sports cars. Most of the "best deals" I have seen and encountered over the years turn out to be more expensive than those cars that seemed over priced at the time. Anyone formerly working for a dealer and knowing the market well will get market for a car and won't give a car away unless there is a reason. Get a PPI, check for scoring and see if damage not reported to car fax. What is a 3.2 996? The last 3.2 911 I had was a 1988 Commerative Edition Cabriolet. My NA 90 had a 3.6. The 6 996s I had were all 3.6s.

Description says never tracked. Not sure how that make sense with a coil-over and roll cage setup.

Seems like a good price, however I also would think that car has been tracked.

You could look in the undercarriage to see if there is lots of bits of tire rubber strewn about from tracking in the wheelwells and suspension parts. I suppose they could have cleaned it off, but thats doubtful.

Are the wheels correct for that year? They might be another example of scoring parts as takeoffs at the dealer.

If your buddy is trustworthy and the car checks out, this looks like a steal. Take it for a drive, and you'll see how nicely it handles.
