I went ahead and changed the starter with a new bosch. Sound seems to have gone away.

Starter Hanging Up - Sound
I had this same sound on my 996.2 and it was the starter hanging up. It would only happen once a month or so and never when i had it in for service. I finally decided to just have the started replaced at 77k and never had the sound again.
