The Diary of a 2011 Carrara White 997.2 C2 PDK by ElectricChair

Who makes those wheels? Are they 19"? I have the exact car and that look is exactly what I want. Nice!!

Beautiful Car

I used to love P21S wax until I discovered Collinite paste wax. Definitely more durable, but just as easy to apply and buff off.

Then I moved onto the world of sealants but the best one I've found was CarParo's Hydro2. It's a simple spray on, and spray off and you can see the beading form right in front of your eyes. Can use it on wheels and windows. Windows seem like they have the strongest form of Rain-X on them. Makes what used to be weekly washes,.... bi-weekly - super simple. I look forward to the rain now, because it's just a joke with this product.

Skip to the 30 second mark. I recommend using one of those chemical/bug sprayers rather than a handheld sprayer. But only because your hand may hurt after washing the car in general.

Just thought I'd share!

shammerman 04-23-2015 10:34 PM

Looking great. Love the wheels :):):)

myw 04-23-2015 11:17 PM

that's very rare to see.

in canada the non turbo II option only come with 8 inch fronts and for a narrowbody car, 11x19 ET67 rear. the c4/c4s will come with 11x19" ET51 but still the 8 inch ET57 front wheel.

i thought always the 8.5/11ET51 was reserved for only a genuine 997.2 turbo.... imo your wider setup is perfect for the narrowbody. looks almost flush.

Yes, looks almost flush in person and gives the car a more "muscular" look

I am starting to like white vehicles more and more. Just bought a new Dodge Ram 1500, in white. Great looking car. Nicely detailed.

myw 04-24-2015 02:21 PM

would you say the rears are more flush then the fronts? or pretty much the same?

Zaino does that, but with alot more work. Going off to investigate that stuff now.

Today I removed a few water spots from the front hood with Meguiar's ScratchX 2.0. Then rewaxed it with P21S Concours Carnauba Wax to protect the paint.

ScratchX 2.0 its a very light product (clear coat safe) that won't damage the paint

To stay in the P21S family you can clean the paint with P21S Cleanser - HERE.

Mine is stock, option code: 840 SportDesign Steering Wheel

This is one of the most beautiful steering wheels of all times IMO.

I like the vintage look and the paddles are so practical!

Re Leather care… as sparingly as possible and never Lexol if you want to preserve the matte/low sheen new look. I only use - works great, as per instructions and a little goes long way.

Thanks, I will try the sonus conditioner next time but I am very happy with lexol products.

I only clean the leather once a year or so since I don't drive much and I always try to avoid black jeans when I take her for a spin.

I have been using lexol for years with no-shiny look results. The trick is to let the conditioner sit for a few minutes and wipe it off with a dry microfiber towel.

I didn't think that the wide body offset OEM wheels would work 100% on a narrow body, great to know as I'm looking for a set just like yours.

Cheers

What does that strip of film protect? Ive seen this on my white 2010 too and just took them off...

What risk am I at without having that little stripe? haha

ElectricChair 09-24-2015 11:17 AM

Some people care for details, some people don't.

phily911 09-24-2015 11:50 AM

Right.. So what detail does this protect?

You may call 1-800-PORSCHE and ask them. After all, they named the part as "Protective Films", not me.

I am a little OCD with my toys, that's the reason I replaced the films instead of just remove them.

If my posts bothers you, just ignore my threads.

phily911 09-24-2015 12:48 PM

Slick, I think for some crazy reason you are offended by my valid question. You have nice cars but you are a wierdo...

Thanks for being so helpful.

Wayne Smith 09-24-2015 01:51 PM

Weird ...

i before e except after c unless sounding like a as in neighbor or weigh, four exceptions if you please, either, neither, leisure, seize.

Oh, and also weird.

Can't we all just get along? :nono:

997v2cabrio 09-26-2015 12:39 AM

Guys look at the pictures. Its a film used on the upper door jam. Most likely to protect the paint from someone who slams the door shut. My 997.2 has them also.

slicky rick 09-26-2015 11:15 AM

I think all 997.2's have it and my car also has them yellowed like the op's and I think it looks good new! Good job electric... But I also think the question of phily is valid...I'm a car diyer and I don't know what it protects the door from...any ideas?

A little OCD is okay. It's when it becomes CDO you are in trouble.

PORSCHE SIGN

I just updated my garage with a PORSCHE sign. A special thanks to rennlister EMC2 for sharing the sign information.

Porsche Garage Sign 9 Feet Long Brushed Silver (I am not affiliated)

The double sided tape that comes with the sign is thin and weak. So, I purchased a that worked very well.

Iithink I found the use for that small paint protection strip by the door. The rubber strip on the door does not hit that portion of the door flat. It slides on that portion so the plastic strip prevents the paint from getting worn out by the consistent sliding of the rubber strip on it every time door is opened and closed.

Photos from the Oktoberfest Concours - Space Coast Region PCA - October 17, 2015.

It was the 1st time we joined a concours and surprisingly we got 2nd place in the water cooled category (1999-Present including turbos and GTs). My kid was so excited!!!

The 997.1 Cobalt Blue with vossen wheels got the 1st place. Very clean car, well deserved! I spoke with the owner (not a rennlister). Very nice guy, a truly Porsche enthusiast. I told him it's about time to join our gang. Let's see if he shows up here.

Exactly. From wikipedia:
The original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was the site of a number of tragic events, including the collision of the US Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn and inbound freighter Capricorn in 1980 which claimed 23 Coast Guardsmen's lives, and a structural collapse caused by a collision with the bridge support by the inbound freighter Summit Venture in 1980 which killed 35 people and ultimately ended the bridge spans' useful life.

Your 911 "White Edition" is gorgeous!

Is it weird I think your C2 looks better than your GT3? Of course I'd rather have the GT3 because of what it is...but your C2 looks awesome.

Thank you! The 997 C2 is a very passionate car. I love the lines of the 997. IMO it is the greatest 911 of all times.

The 991 GT3 is a weapon!

My car came from factory with this badge. The simple "911" badge was introduced as an option for the 997.2 model (if I am not wrong).

My VIN build shows this option as:
911 - Model Designation "911"

Suncoast Parts has it on their website in black or chrome:

Thanks, I will try the sonus conditioner next time but I am very happy with lexol products.

I only clean the leather once a year or so since I don't drive much and I always try to avoid black jeans when I take her for a spin.

I have been using lexol for years with no-shiny look results. The trick is to let the conditioner sit for a few minutes and wipe it off with a dry microfiber towel.

So Today, I cleaned the leather with lexol cleaner wipes and following the suggestion from fellow rennlister ADias, I used the Sonus Leather Conditioner (SON-610-8).
I found it better than the lexol conditioner wipes. It was easier to wipe it off and no shiny look at all.

I am just back from the highly recommended Driver's Choice Motors in Longwood, FL (I am not affiliated) where her 6-year old maintenance service has been performed.

Performed services:
- spark plugs replacement;
- oil and filter change;
- air filters replacement;
- cabin air filter replacement;
- brake fluid flush and change.

Odometer reading: 14,163

Simon (Porsche technician / rennlist member Ptech1) did a fantastic job

Any reason why you didnt get the PDK clutch oil and the AWD controller oil changed?

The recommended change interval for spark plugs is 4 years. Did you keep going another two years due to your low mileage?

CF

Solid questions

About the PDK clutch oil change, manual says 60,000 miles or no later than every 6 years. Michael from Driver's Choice Motors told me we could wait another year due to the low mileage (14,000) and he knows I do not track my cars.

She is a C2 (RWD). So, no AWD controller oil to change.

About spark plugs, I really don't know what happened. All previous maintenance has been performed at my local Porsche dealer. Before her warranty expired, I requested a major 4 years service and I got a huge bill but (sincerely) I didn't check what was suggested in the manual since the Porsche dealer should have know all the information. This week, before I schedule an appointment with Michael, I checked all my Porsche dealer's invoices and I found nothing about spark plugs replacement. Perhaps they have replaced the spark plugs two years ago with the 4 years maintenance service and forgot to charge me (I doubt that).

cool flash 09-17-2016 11:15 AM

Thanks for your reply.

The reason I asked is because I am coming up on my 6 year service and although my mileage is a bit higher than yours it's a long ways from the 60,000 mile.

Regards,

CF

Funny, you kinda started a trend on those Turbo 11 wheels with the turbo offsets on a C2 body. Gave me confirmation that they fit without rubbing

Been looking for a clean set for a while now. Not to many available up North. Very expensive new.

Great combination white with grey shoes.

Now that's commitment to keeping your paint looking pristine! At least according to the pics, you were the only trip participant that went through the trouble. Did the other PCA guys give you a hard time about it (all good-natured, of course)? The lengths to which you go to make sure your car stays in great condition means that you will have a prize of a car for resale if/when you ever decide to go that route. You can say "immaculate condition" and actually be telling the truth!

What made you decide to take the C2 vs. the GT3 by chance?

You are right. I was the only idiot that spent 5 hours blue taping my car :o. But it was well worth. I washed and detailed her this weekend and I found zero rock chips.
Most of members gave me compliments for protecting the car. I took the C2 to prepare the territory for the GT3 :D

I wouldn't say it was an idiot move at all! Nobody likes rock chips, but few have enough commitment to the cause to do a 5hr tape job. I know I wouldn't have had the patience for that! Looking forward to your comparisons when you do get your GT3 down there. The Tail of the Dragon is one of those all-time drives that I want to experience one day.

Beautiful pics as always EC. Looks like a great trip - thanks for sharing.
Coincidentally I was at the Porsche Experience center a day before you for the Panamera Preview. It certainly is a great facility.

You have to! I was forgetting how fun it is to drive the 997 on curves. It's just an amazing car!

I will probably go again next year with my PCA group. Not sure if going to drive the C2 or the GT3. I would need to ship the GT3 since I am not feeling like putting 1,500 useless miles on it driving on the I-95.

Thanks! Yes, it was a great trip. After the Dragon, I feel even more connected with the car. It was like: "Ok 997, you can do this and you deserve it... let's do it!".

About the PEC, it is a great place for p-car enthusiasts. I was told they are building an Hotel on site. Looks like they are doing their homework.

Homemade wheel cribs

After getting back from the PCA Mountain trip, I have decided to add a little more sound to the "neutered" stock exhaust system (non-PSE).

Planning on a DIY project (gundo hack + fabspeed x-pipe center bypass), I ordered a pair of rhino ramps. Knowing these ramps are only 9" wide and my rear tires are about 12" wide, I did a search and found a few photos where wide tires where seating on ramps with a few inches not touching the ramps. I thought it would work just fine. As soon as I received the ramps, I found out that these new rhino models have side borders with approx. height of almost 3/4 inch and I was afraid this could damage the tires.

I took a look at other options and only found wider products from race ramps, which range from 12" to 14" wide and $250 to $400+.
Since my intention was to lift the car with my floor jack and put the ramps under the wheels, I was not feeling like expending that much on a pair of race ramps.

Searching around, I found lots of photos of homemade car ramps and wheel cribs. So, I decided to go ahead and build my own wheel cribs.

I took some measurements, did some sketches and went to lowes. The dimensions of cribs should be 20" L x 14" W x 5-6" H.

Here is the list:
- 2 x Top Choice Kiln Dried Whitewood (Item #31878) 2-in x 6-in x 12-ft
- 1 x Multi Purpose Stud (Item #1030) 2-in x 3-in x 96-in
- 50 pcs Flat Head Phillips Wood Screws #8 x 2-1/2-in

My local lowes offers free cuts, so I asked them to cut:
- 8 pieces 2-in x 6-in x 20-in
- 6 pieces 2-in x 6-in x 14-in
- 4 pieces 2-in x 3-in x 14-in (stoppers)

They had a plywood waste seating around and I asked if they would sell and cut it in 2 pieces of 20-in x 14-in. They charged $1 per piece LOL.

Total cost in lumber and hardware was around $30 bucks.

* notes: This setup gives you 5 1/4" of height. If I would do it again, I would do it 2" longer (22" L). That would make it easier to center the cribs with the tires when lowering the floor jack.

Ok, I just came back from my 1st ride with the hacked side mufflers (with stock center muffler).

Holly Molly! What a difference! I should have done this since day one! Sounds like PSE but a little louder.

Heading to the muffler shop last week, I was decided to do the hack with 1.75" pipes but I changed my mind in the last min and went "all in" with 2" pipes.

Installation photos to follow.

btw. I should be receiving the fabspeed x-pipe next week.

Mumbles 10-28-2016 02:39 PM

Good news, do you happen to have a photo of the work performed to the mufflers ? maybe that's all you really need ?

I will post photos later this week. After driving the weekend with the hacked mufflers, I think I will not mind a little more louder.

997.2 Removing the Side Mufflers

Here are the steps to remove the side mufflers without removing wheels and without removing the center muffler:

TOOLS:
- WD-40
- e12 torx
- t25 torx tool and 10mm socket
- 13mm half moon wrench
- 13mm regular socket
- 13mm deep socket
- 3" wrench extender

1) Soak the cat bolts (3 each side) with WD-40 a day before:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...65dce4b29d.jpg

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...49c60f7056.jpg

2) Put the car on cribs or ramps (my cribs are 5 1/4" high). I don't think I could have removed the side mufflers without the rear being on cribs:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3357d3dc61.jpg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3bff411912.jpg

3) Remove the tips with e12 torx (and do yourself a favor cleaning them up - I used fine steel wool):

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...c35fc0cbad.jpg

4) Loosen the center muffler clamps with 13mm socket (2 each side):

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3944c3d449.jpg

5) Using the t25 torx tool and the 10mm socket, remove the side bars that secures the bumper:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...5bb0b42dbd.jpg

6) Loosen the 3 cat nuts with the 13mm deep socket. I could managed to use my ratchet wrench with a 3" extender and the regular 13mm socket to remove the "evil nut" on the passenger's side. On the driver's side I used the 13mm half moon.
Obs. If you are not going to replace your center muffler you don't have to loosen the 3rd nut. You should loosen only the 2 nuts that secure the side muffler's support.

7) Disconnect the side muffler's pipe from the center muffler and carefully let it drop to the floor:

Thank you! I removed the side mufflers and took them to an local exhaust shop. They "gundo hacked" the mufflers and I have already installed them back to the car. I will post photos as soon as I get some free time.

Here are some photos, Gundo hack with 2" pipes. I called 3 local exhaust shops and none had stainless steel pipes. So, I went with aluminized steel. The hack was done by Muffler Man Orlando (no affiliation) and the cost was $130 for both mufflers.

Fabspeed x-pipes installation

Yesterday I finally installed the fabspeed x-pipes. Took me 30 min to remove the stock center muffler and about 45 min to install the fabspeed x-pipes.

First impressions:

1) I was afraid adding the x-pipes to 2" pipes gundo hack would sound too loud. But no, I would say the volume in a scale from 1 to 10 went from 6 with gundo to 7-8 with gundo + x-pipes.

2) Firing it up and giving some gas I immediately noted the sound is now more refined/tuned, kind of European style but not like f-cars or lambos (which IMO would sound odd). Just the perfect sound for a Porsche.

3) First ride and, besides the tuned tone and a little more burbling, not much difference in volume below 3k RPM.

4) Now... above 3k RPM the thing comes alive. A kind of metallic/raspy sound I dare to say sounds similar than the 991 GT3. When switching gears (specially from 2-3 and 3-4) the sound is just... intoxicating!

5) I noticed more burbling when taking foot off the throttle.

6) No droning, no vibrations.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for volume, just do the 2" pipes gundo hack. For a more refined sound and a few extra volume, adding the fabspeed x-pipes to gundo is a great option. Overall, I think it was a well spent grand.

Installation tip:

Set all parts in place without tightening. You have more room for adjustments when parts loosen. When you get all parts in place just start tightening the 6 cat nuts, then the 2 x-pipe support brackets and last the x-pipe clamps.

About fabspeed:

The quality is superb. No installation instructions, some might have hard time figuring out how to install the support brackets.

Indeed, today I'm exchanging rubber at my local P dealer. Removing the worn 305's and replacing with my oem N 295's with 90% tread.

I did spend close to three days cleaning them and buffing light marks out. Wife thinks I'm mad ( It does help in my world.. ) but its another 80 days before we get some decent weather to run on Summer tires.

Fantastic write up and feedback! Thank you very much for posting up, and I am thrilled to hear it has met your goals :) When you have some good sound clips be sure to send them my way so we can post them up on our site!

How to remove 997.2 PCM / Radio knobs.

The PCM knobs became kind of sticky with the high humidity and hot weather in FL. I removed them (with a T-6 torx bit) the other day and cleaned them with rubbing alcohol.

Note that the 997.1 PCM knobs are different. The knobs on the 997.2 PCM are two-pieces and have caps/covers.

If you need to replace them, here are suncoast links for reference (I am not affiliated):

Did cleaning those knobs fix the stickyness? we have the same exact car. i have 28k miles and started noticing it maybe 3-5k ago? although its more a factor of time being in fla.

Yes, it's fixed. I don't think it gonna come back since cleaning with rubbing alcohol removes all the sticky surface and what you have in the end is plain solid plastic.

997 Stone Guards Replaced

Stone guards replaced.

I purchased a set of OEM parts (997-504-826-04 and 997-504-825-04) from an online shop but item was delivered in damaged condition, box was smashed and parts had dirty marks. Shop refunded my order and they didn't request to return the parts (I used these damaged parts later to create my template).

After the online shop issues, I decided to order the parts from my local dealer but, in the meantime, I found a video from carfanatic (I think he is a rennlist member) and I decided to give it a try:
youtube.com/watch?v=O0IcnZ1JE30

Removing the parts was easy. I just left the car in the sun (Florida/Summertime) for 30 min and started to peel them off from the top to the bottom. Almost no residue was left behind. I then cleaned the area with P21S Paintwork Cleanser following with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol.

I used the damaged OEM parts to create my template. In my first attempt to install the driver’s side I realized that I added too few baby shampoo to the water mix. The part wasn't sliding properly and it got stickied in some points creating marks on the film. It was OK but I later replaced the entire piece. The passenger's side was easier to install.

Some things I learned in the process:
- Get a brand new scissors to cut the film.
- After marking the film with a permanent marker, wait at least 30 min to start cutting it.
- Do not try to clean the film with alcohol, it removes the clear coat.
- More baby shampoo is better than less. I think a good mix is 2 soup spoons of baby shampoo and 26 oz of water. Shake it a little before spraying it.
- Don't be afraid of spraying shampoo/water mix to your car and on the film. The more you spray, the better.
- Keep in mind that the film is stretchable. I started to install it from the top and could manage to stretch it while finishing the bottom to align it with the rocker panel line.
- Patience is the key. If you make a mistake, don't panic! Just carefully pull the film off, spray both sides, spray the panel and try again. You can play with the film for hours as long as you keep it wet.

Overall, I am very happy with the results. In a scale from 0-10 I would give it (myself ahaha) a 9.5. Car looks much much much better and cleaner now!

These are Euro style side markers. I got them from suncoast.

It's an easy DIY project. I recommend you to search for "997 clear side markers installation" on youtube.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S PS4S 235/35 front and 305/30 rear

Moved from other thread.
** Thank you to the members that contributed to the thread. **

In need of new shoes, I decided to, while replacing tires, lower the car with Eibach Pro-Kit and add spacers to give it a more sportier look. Doing it all at same time will save me $350 in labor. I opted for Eibach to give the car a more conservative look. The perfect height IMO is the 997 with S-PASM suspension, which is 20mm lower than the 997 C2 with base suspension. Eibach lowers the car around 1" (25,4mm), which is very close to 20mm.

Here is the setup:

Stock Turbo II Wheels NB
Front 8" x 19" ET57
Rear 11" x 19" ET67

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S PS4S
Front 235/35
Rear 305/30

Eibach Pro-kit Performance Springs
Part: 7217.140

Adaptec Spacers
Front 10mm
Rear 15mm

Tires were delivered last Friday, just one day after placed my order on tirerack. Very impressive fast shipping! Eibach kit is on the way. Lenny from Adaptec promissed to ship the spacers today.

You can't go wrong with Driver's Choice. They have the best tire mounting machines money can buy plus laser alignment equipment. Michael guaranteed no scratches on my wheels... he knows I am picky ahahah.

I opted for the Michelin PS4S because I like it's sidewall design. But I was tempted to order the S04 at around $1k.

I hope to see you around at a local Cars and Coffee someday.

Unfortunately, I am having a hard time with Adaptec. I emailed them on Oct/26 to check the availability of the parts. I got reply from the owner stating they had the parts in stock and he would be shipping them no later than Monday Oct/30. Placed my order on Oct/27 but parts have not been shipped yet. He blames SEMA.

Kind of disappointed since they are rennlist sponsors.

I remember you had a 997 C2 (Atlas Gray?) with Eibach. Yeah, I still have the 991 GT3 and I'm not planning to sell it, it's my garage queen :-)

I am still in shock about how much better the 997 looks with Eibach and spacers. No scrape yet but I know it gonna happen soon or later. Handling is much better than stock.

I dont disagree. The 991 is a great car, but there’s a reason I miss the 997. Only thing I didn’t like was tire/road noise. Loved everything else about it.

Man, your car looks absolutely amazing after the Eibachs and spacers. When I went from the non-PASM suspension in my car to the Eibachs it almost felt like “ok, I have a Porsche now”.

What really surprised me, was that the ride improvement was almost as dramatic as the look!

I agree.. amazing how just a .75" drop and spacers can change the look of a car. The 305 rear tires also give the car the muscular look I was looking for.... and the handling is much much better now.

Bosch Platinum AGM H7 Group 94 (Part#: 94R800BAGM)

I just installed a Bosch Platinum AGM H7 Group 94 (Part#: 94R800BAGM) that I ordered online and picked-up at my local Pep Boys. The final cost was $176.51 - $18 core = $158.51 including tax. Took me about 10 min to replace the battery. Perfect fit, no adjustments needed. 48 months replacement warranty.

Celebrating 10 years of ownership!

I gave her a detailed bath this weekend to celebrate 10 years of ownership! Exactly 10 years ago, on July/27/2010, I sealed a deal with Champion Porsche and took her out of their inventory. I'm the first owner and hopefully this car stays in the family for many years to come.

Hands down she is the best car I've ever had! So many memories! Driving my kids to the Disney Parks after school are among the best ones. Lots of PCA road trips; Tail of The Dragon, Ingram Collection & Road Scholars, the Brumos Museum, Porsche HQ in Atlanta, Daytona and Sebring parade laps! Elsa (named by my youngest daughter after the movie Frozen) just eat and eat miles.

My hats off to you Porsche for building such a great, iconic and passionate machine!

The transformation from stock to the Eibach and spacers is incredible. Your car looks great and hats off for meticulously maintaining it. I just got into a 997.1S and put some Eibach springs on it as well and it looks incredible. I always hear about springs "settling" after some time, but don't know if there is anything to that. Did you find that to be the case or are they sitting at the same height from your initial measurements?

Here she is all polished up. Waiting on some 5mm spacers to complete the look! These Sport wheels are 8.5" and 11.5' wide so didn't want to go with too much spacer.

Gave her some extra attention this weekend.

My steps to wax:
1) Wash and dry.
2) Apply paintwork cleanser and buff off.
3) Apply carnauba wax and let it sit overnight.
4) Buff off the dried wax.
