WARNING--The Mind-Boggling Cost of a Water Pump
#16
Agree with others who said it smells fishy. I used to do a lot of wrenching back in the day. A seized water pump can certainly cause much collateral damage, but only if the car is continued to be driven with it overheating, and even then I can't see how the alternator could become a casualty. My 997's water pump went also. It was replaced under my extended warranty so I paid the $100 deductible and that's it. I don't recall the full bill but I'm sure it wasn't more than $1200. I don't see any way it and an alternator could even approach the amount you were quoted.

9+ hours to change the water pump? I did mine in less than 4 which included changing the drive belt, and all three pulleys. I did this laying on the garage floor with the rear up on jackpoints. I would say if I were to do it again, within a month or so after the first time, it would take Maybe 2 1/2 hours.

I just priced this out today at my local Indy. $1,100 for the water pump, thermostat, gasket, and labour. The serpentine belt is about $250 including labour. This is CDN dollars so expect to pay less in the lower 48. The pricing you're getting is insane.

I had my Indy give me an estimate a few weeks ago as I'll likely have it done at the next service due to approaching 40K miles. $900 including the belt using OEM parts.

Northern NJ/NYC = bad actors. Sorry, if you are proud of living there... but I find it the wild west and no one gives a crap about each other..... at least those selling stuff. I also found New Yorkers/N NJ car owners to be the most ignorant of their machines. I got tons of stories......
I grew up in a blue collar steel town in Western PA (Deer Hunter land) and there, everyone fixed stuff. I knew guys who made screws in their basement!
Smells fishy.... I recommend you just move.

For folks who had to get this done, at what milage/age did your tensioner or water pump go?

I replaced a perfectly good WP at 52,000 miles last year.

The original tension and idler pulleys still spun OK, but were a bit noisier and "rougher" feeling than the new replacement parts.

You've had your answer from the very beginning. As soon as he told you it would take him 4 hours to inspect your "drive band" you should have known you were being ripped off. It takes about 15 minutes to expose that area for inspection. And maybe another 15-30 to figure out what is going on. Call it 1 hour max. Get your car outta there!
