Would you trade your 997 straight up for a 991?

The 991 has a flat six engine stuck in the back so they call it a 911 - that's where the similarity ends. It really doesn't look like a 911 anymore. It's a boat (okay, a high performance boat). I have zero interest in owning one.

No, I would NOT trade my 997.2 GTS for a 991. I love the widebody voluptuous rear end of my 997. I love the steering. And with a stock powerkit, the car has more power than I am capable of using safely on the street. The only thing I am left wanting is a GT3-RS wing in the rear and the aero front dam in the front to go with it.

Yes, I would swap for a 991 in a heartbeat.
I find the "too big" and "boat" comments about the 991 hilarious, especially since the 991 is the same width as the 997 and whopping 1" longer than the 997.
You think you don't like the 991? Wait until the 991.2 comes out with turbo engines in all of the variants except for the GT3.

I had driven a 991 on 2 separate occasions after I sold my 996. It was a completely different feel. Then I drove the 997.2 that I eventually bought. I admit the price was a huge factor, but the 997 still had that raw sports car feel (most of you know what I am talking about).
Just last weekend, I came out of a store and a black 991 Cab was parked right next to me. I can honestly say that I preferred the lines of my car. The 991 isn't much bigger, but it looks like it was stepped on. I prefer the more classic 911 stance of my car.
The 997.2 is the last great 911...until the next one comes along.

Every major car magazine and reviewer has pretty much said the same line wrt the 991: “great car, but does not make you scream, “I have to have this car”” It is precisely the feeling I got when I first looked at it in person, with said feeling only to be reinforced when I test drove it. I fell in love with the 997 the very first day I saw it at the dealer, parked right next to a 996. For me, it was a no-brainer; it was, by all means, an impulse buy.
I really don’t have anything against the 991. But, just like the 996 failed to inspire, so does the 991.

I don't dislike PDK, I just don't want it in a Porsche. I've never driven on a track in my life and have no desire to but I have driven PDK on the street. Using a clutch and shifting gears with a stick is an essential part of the sports car experience to me.

I completely agree. Come on guys, every generation has gotten bigger but in reality the 991 is not much bigger compared to the 997. The cabin feels a lot bigger, which is smart engineering... but the car itself really is not much bigger.

991 looks much bigger in person. It is the proportions. As for "sleek" I actually kinda agree it looks a bit more "sleek" because of the greater rake in the windshield, but to me it looks much less aggressive.
The 996 looks more sleek than the 993 but the 993 looks more aggressive than the 996. Similar thing here. The 991 has opted to hide (or slightly reduce) the 911 shape in favor of the traditional exotic shape. The crease on the rear, along with the windshield rake and position of b pillars all add to that.
I like certain elements of the 991 look but I just can't help but see it as a less interesting design vs. the 997. Much like I find the pinnacle of Ferrari design to be the 288 GTO, and also find the F355 more appealing (other than reliability) than the 360 Modena... The latter reminds me too much of a bowrider / $30k boat or something...
My guess is that the 997 will be significantly more favored / sought after in about 10 years, once the newness and frankly fractional performance improvement of the 991 becomes completely meaningless.
Given I couldn't care less about the newness / age of the car, and don't care about 1/10th in the 0-60 stats (and don't want PDK) I ignore those elements... in the 991 I just see a more bloated looking, more GT / "rich guy" mobile, than traditional sports car... Still an awesome car.

It will be interesting to see. It looks like the 991.1 will be the last naturally aspirated non-GT 911, since starting with the 991.2 the Carreras will all be turbos. So I kind of think the 991 will be more sought after than 997 for that reason.

It's too long a list "last NA non-GT etc"... It isn't a meaningful departure so long as some NA motor Porsches remain. It will be the whole of the car that will matter and the 991 with electric steering and a further move towards GT will not be judged as favorably. The 993 ticked more boxes than simply last air cooled... If it looked like the 996 it would not claim nearly the position it does now...
