Default Tire Wear

I removed the wheels from my 911 to clean them and got a surprise. Both rear tires were worn out on the inside edge to the point that the steel belts were showing. The rest of the tire had good tread. I couild not see the worn edge when the tires were on the car. I had a indy do a four wheel alignment today. He said this inside tire wear is somewhat common on 911's. Suggest you regularly check your rear tires for wear.

Got surprised exactly the same way. Noticed that the road noise from the rear was getting considerably louder and did a close inspection of the rear tires. Sure enough, the inside tread was almost smooth @ 18K miles. They might have passed NC state inspection but there was no way they would make it the remaining few months until the inspection was actually due. Replaced the orignal Pilots with Bridgestones (great sale price from TR).

Tom...how many miles on your tires and whats the wheel configuration?

Luckily, my Indi does a tire & brake check at every oil change for free

The tires had 17,000 miles on them. Stock 4S Sport Design wheels.

That's excellent mileage. Consider yourself fortunate.

Yep, this is normal tire wear. But if you're not wearing out the outside corner before the inside, you're obviously not having enough fun with your car

^^^This^^^

Too much straight line driving and not enough fun in the corners. Head for the mountains friends.

Yes, this.

I had some drives from the Bay Area to SoCal. My tires went bad and I did not know it until I yanked them to do the 40K service.

I played with the alignment a bit and with a couple thousand miles they seem fine.

The high tire pressure that was suggested did make the car dance (badly) on the twisties. Lowering the pressure improved things, but I think the change in front toe in has adversely affected the fun factor.

I continue to raise the car each weekend for examination.

Front toe-out really helps turn-in, but when combined with negative camber, can also really eat inside corners. I set mine neutral as a compromise with a little toe-in in the rear to keep the tail controllable. More front camber should reduce understeer and help the fun factor without hurting tire wear much. Max it out!

Wife bought car (2011 Carrera S cab) with 19K miles, just replaced rears (Bridgestone Potenzas) at 34K. Tires probably had another 2-3K in them but given her upcoming driving course @ Sonoma Raceway last weekend, we didn't want to take any chances her car wouldn't qualify for the track. Strangely the fronts still looked almost brand-new re: tread life, so I'm hoping this next set will go 16-18K miles. Then we can think about Michelins, or maybe stick with the Potenzas; they seem to ride, handle, steer, brake, and wear just fine and aren't loud to my ears (with no frame of reference or comparison, of course).
