Default Easy question, tired the search...

What year range is 997.1 and 997.2? Also, what are the major differences between the models?

Thanks!

The 997.2 has the 9A1 motor. No IMS.

And updated PCM, LED tails and fogs, and I think a slightly tweaked suspension. Oh and PDK instead of tip if you're going autobox.

I think the google search link was made to really help you. It is much easier to use google to search for something on this forum. If you google what you want it will show links to the forum with the information you need. The search engine here gives too much information, some relevant and some not relevant. If you did not get the answers you need here is a quick run down. 997.1 2004-2008 997.2 2009-2012. Now that is the generic because the specialty models have slightly different dates for the change (i.e. turbo's, the 4's gt3's ect). Usually a year or two later. 997.2 has different headlights and taillights (hid and led). As mentioned above new motor and transmission. PCM is touch screen and better integration of nav and Bluetooth satalite radio, and I pod. Several other nuances but that is what comes off the top of my head, and what most focus or notice most.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for. I know I can Google it, but I wanted input from owners, that's why I came to a forum for input. And as I said, I used the forums search function and it gave me nothing.

Specifically, I wanted to know about the engine and know whether it was prone to the same issues as the 996. Are the 997.1's still a risk because they have the IMSB?

Yes but how big of a risk I can't say. I'm still looking into this myself. Of course the 997.2's have DFI, Right? Does this have issues? It seems every engine has some sort of a potential issue. How much is linked to maintenance and driving style?

Exactly same questions I am looking into. I am getting so many mixed reviews on the 996 and I think that the 997.1 shares the same engine, yet I don't see as many complaints about the IMSB. Heck, there is even a sticky at the top of this forum about whether owners have had issues or not.

I went with a 997.2 because:

1. I like the interior electronics
2. Seat ventilation
3. newer key
4. 385 vs 355 hp
5. exterior led lights and dynamic head lights
6. C2S wheels that came with the car

Almost all of that can be upgraded on a 997.1 but after I added up all the costs for parts, some labor and the time/effort it would take to source everything, I was willing to pay extra to have a no worries about the engine and to have a newer car.

Just bought this book and it did a very nice job of not just illustrating differences, but gave opinions about benefits of the change/or detriment...if there were any. Enjoy...

The 997.1 had a different IMS solution after 2005. Actually it was introduced late for model year 2005. It has a different bearing and very low, if any fault frequency. See the sticky thread at the top.
