Semi-
Great info and pics, thanks. Does the headliner frame contact surface have a groove in it or is it just flat and held in by resistance? Looks like the front corners at least have grooves where the sunroof frame holds it in, I am getting noises from those areas, and if I push on those areas they make a creaking sound.
Also, how did you pull the rear section off, I can't get my fingers in there to pull it.
Appreciate your help!

No grooves, its completely flat. Looking closer at it, its a metal core wrapped in a plastic liner with the bottom lined in felt. I recommend taking the entire headliner down and checking the felt. Flex the trim, pop the front corners and lower it. The back corners will then come down easily. Remove the entire headliner and you'll understand how the cutout trim is held in place better.

Ok will do; how did you pull the back of the headliner off its hooks, can't get fingers or tools under the headliner back there. The manual says to pull it towards the rear to disengage it, but pull where?
BTW, what year and model is your car?

There are tabs/hooks at the back of the headliner. You need to push the whole piece towards the rear of the car, parallel to the roof to disengage. If you hare having problems, try doing it last after the front, center trim, mid bar, and sides are removed.

I'm assuming there is something lose, and hoping someone has had a similar scenario and can point me in a direction or two.
Graham-
Took down my headliner (with Semi's help) and found the main noise was due to the front left SR frame mounting bolt was loose, so I re-torqued all to spec, 7.4 ft lbs (abt 88 inch lbs.). If you are going to attempt doing this job you will need the Factory Repair Manual and a set of plastic pry tools for automotive trim ($10).

Thanks - If I've read everything correctly here; I have to take down the entire head liner to get at the sunroof frame to then tighten the bolts within the sunroof frame?

That's IF the problem is loose bolts. The noise could be something else , so it's a crpshoot. I got lucky. If I knew it was that one bolt I could have tightened it by only taking off A-pillar, and partial C-pillar and unattaching driver's side part of headliner. The bolts aren't within the frame they are on top of it holding the frame to the roof. It's a pita job because of the risk of breaking trim pieces and damaging the headliner. And the noise could be elsewhere.

Default Thank you

First I like to thank you for posting this. I followed the instruction and found two broken rails behind the sun visor.

On my 996, the rattle was called by the metal rods that were used to support or shape the headliner.

OP, did you have to remove the headliner completely to replace those two plastic pieces? Thanks.

You can get access without removing the whole headliner. Remove both a-pillar trims, visors and dome switch. Then pull back the front piece of the headliner.

I think I have the same problem. But have not removed my headliner yet to confirm. Do you by chance know what the 997.555.690.02 and 997.555.689.02 parts are for? What function do they serve. Thanks.

I had the same problem and fixed the issue without purchasing a new clip. I drilled holes in the plastic and stitched it back to getting with metal wire. Here's a tutorial I made.

Bumping this thread as it helped me chase down a rattle I thought was coming from the sunroof. Both the driver and passenger side were broken right in half.
