$230 oil change...and i supplied the oil...?...!
I believe in supporting my dealer however was really nonplussed by a $175 labor charge to change the oil on my Carrera S in addition to filter, crush washer, totaling $230.
Is this the norm?

Yes. At a dealership.

Takes about 10 minutes to change the oil on our cars. Easiest oil changes I have ever done. I would go back and speak with the Service Manager and remind them you supplied the oil.....

Well given that my dealer charges $325 for an oil change, (I have always changed it myself) it sounds like you got a bargain on the labor!
There are a few dealers in highly competitive markets that run oil change specials, but in most cases that's just the way it is. Expensive.

I believe the local dealer here is $190 on special but that includes only 5 quarts. No tax included either.

I verified before booking this that the dealer oil change also includes a general check of the car (other fluids, seals, brake thickness, and about a dozen other things that my dealer called out) so you get some peace of mind that other systems are in order, at least as far as a simple on-the-rack scan goes. Of course, they are doing more to find extra things to fix to make more money (warranty or otherwise) and are not being particularly altruistic.
I think you'll find that your most dealers charge $175 or more per hour ($190ish in Austin I think) and its rare that anything will get billed at less than an hour.
I largely decided to pay the extra just to get the other checks on the car and to make sure there is no question of proper service while I'm under CPO (no it's not required, but I'd hate to get into an argument over it if something pricey happened). I was still too cheap to pay $200 more for the brake flush though, I'm doing that myself with my son this weekend (he's 16 but loves to do car stuff, I'm afraid I've managed to infect him with the car bug).
BTW, you can also ask the service guys to keep and bag the old oil filter so you can examine it for any unusual metal content for an early warning of anything bad going on.

No, the dealer and manufacturer cannot require that you get your car serviced at the dealership. They CAN require that you prove that you had the service done, if you have an issue and they WILL decline a warranty repair if you cannot prove that the car was serviced satisfactorily.
So, keep good records if you use an indie.

I do simple stuff (oil, brakes, farkles) on my bikes not for the savings but because I enjoy it and it gives me a chance to inspect the bikes. I don't do oil changes on the Land Rover because it has no drain plug and I'd need a pump. It seems pretty straight forward on the 911.

For ones who do oil changes themselves, where do you dump the oil?
