Did you buy new or used?

Of my 40+ cars that have been across my driveway, 5 have been new, 3 demo's. The rest were used.
My 997 C2S bought used w/9oooo kms. Rolled 24,ooo on it. Sold it for what I paid for it. When I do one again it will have less Km's on it, so I can keep it longer.

Thank you all, and keep the stats coming. I'll be on a plane tomorrow for most of the evening, but I intend to do a statistical analysis of the responses in about a week. My curiosity was driven by a sense that the true devotees and aficianados were not new car buyers willing to spend $120,000 and take a two year $35,000 hit, but more practical types.

IMO those who find themselves willing to buy new would also consider themselves "true devotees and aficionados"!

I don't think it is that "true devotees and aficionados" are not new car buyers... rather, given a particular budget or comfort level to spendo on a car, buyers that are willing to pay big dollars on a used car, tend to be enthusiasts.
I spent more on my used 911 than most brand new Audis or Mercs would cost me. If I was just into driving the newest thing out there, and showing up with the latest model year, I would not have purchased a prior gen car. The universe of people willing to spend serious money on a used car tends to be limited to the enthusiasts.
Now, many enthusiasts will also buy new -- thankfully -- which is why there is a market for enthusiast-focused cars (GT3s, GT3 RS, GT2, etc) that for the majority of the public, are completely indistinguishable prestige-wise, from a 911.
So, we could logically expect that:
% of people who bought 997s used who are enthusiasts > % of people who bought 997s new who are enthusiasts
This doesn't prove what you wrote (and perhaps I'm splitting hairs) -- that true enthusiasts buy their cars used, not new. It is just the proportion of people buying in the used car market is going to be more skewed towards the enthusiasts, as they are more willing to spend "expensive new car money" on a used car that often has tens of thousands of miles, doesn't have the latest tech doodads, and may not have a warranty.

Spent too much time in Finance. I simply can't bring myself to eat the first 3 years of severe depreciation on a car over 100k. So my basic rule is anything over 100k(original MSRP) I will only buy used anything else I buy new. It's my compromise because I do absolutely love the feeling of configuring and waiting for a new car to arrive.

I get where you're coming from (I've pointed this out myself a couple times) but would word it slightly differently.
