How important is warranty on 2009 997 4S
I am in the process of trying to buy a 2009 (41K miles) 911 Carrera 4S (see pic below) and it comes with a "certified warranty" until the end of May 2015. How important would it be for me to go head and buy an extended warranty now...I know this is somewhat of a personal choice based on risk mitigation but just wondering what the 997 community thinks as you guys have a lot more experience with the 997 than I do as I am coming from a 2009 Lexus ISF...thanks

MY997, how well was car maintained? One owner? Tracked? PDK or manual? I purchased a Platinum 3 yr/36k mile warranty on account of a "potential" PDK issue. The warranty has Already paid for it self this past May when my PCM system locked up and needed replacing. The cars are very reliable but an occasional hiccup can be pricey. Peace of mind or put the $ in a rainy day account. Enjoy the car, it is beautiful.

1) Get a PPI done...does this stand fro Pre-Purchase Inspection??? Not sure what this is exactly or who would do this (the dealer?)
2) Get as much info about the maintenance as possible like last major servce which should have been done at 30K, etc...
3) What is this whole IMS thing? Or is this only an issue on the older 997?
Thanks again for any help you can provide...

PPI does in fact stand for pre purchase inspection. Get it done at a local inid shop. Tell us where you are and someone may know of a good indi for you.
IMS was a big issue for early build 05 cars. Late 05-08 cars had a different bearing with much less issues.
I don't believe 09 had the bearing issue at all.
Get service records and get a DME report printed out . Can't hurt to run carfax
Good luck, she is nice looking

If it is a PDK, get the warranty. If I am not mistaken, 2009 was the first year of PDK so there were still some bugs to be ironed out. You don't hear much about bad PDKs but when something goes wrong, they have to replace the whole thing. The PDK on my 2009 4S Cab went bad a few months after I bought it. If I hadn't had a CPO warranty, it would have cost me $10K+. Instead I go a new transmission at no cost.

i feel that my ims and rms issues have triggered a slew of concern. i paid $3800 for my fidelity warranty. to date they have covered just shy of $28k repairs
911's are reliable, despite this the warranties are almost cents on the dollar when you have a major fail.

For what it's worth a CPO car with Porsche backing is the best warranty - but it's only 2 years or 50k miles. A Fidelity "service contract" is fine - more expensive I think - covers less as in it does not include road side assistance and most importantly - they will not write it if the car has no existing warranty left. That's what I found out. They would not sell me a warranty, which is really a service contract as only the dealer can offer a warranty, because the car I called about getting one for was out of warranty - they didn't even ask me if it was or not - just said no.
Personally, with these cars as expensive as they are and when they break - I wouldn't buy one without it! I think it's very important and I hope I never use it - right! That is when I find a car to buy it will have a CPO. I'm still looking - glad you found yours!

The Porsche and Mercedes are very reliable vehicles when properly maintained. My 2009 C4S PDK has 60K miles, dealer maintained since the day I bought it and no major issues. Wife's 2011 Mercedes GL550 67K miles and pretty much flawless. 2002 Mercedes E55 110K miles and still going strong without major issue. I don't baby my cars, I drive it all year round. I don't skim on service and follow the schedule maintenance religiously. All my vehicles are out of warranty and no plan to get them. The major repair are expensive and happens. But it is still cheaper to fix than spending another $100k fir a new car.

Having owned an '09 with PDK, I would not own it without a good warranty
