Acceptable Wheel Offset Variance from OEM Specs
Hoping the community can provide some counsel on wheel offset. There are some really cool looking wheels out there, but whenever I look at their fitment specs they are off, often a good bit, from OEM. I expect some variation, but as a new 997 owner I have no idea of what acceptable variation is. Would hate to buy some wheels only to find they materially change how the car feels, create more rocks flying up and dinging the rear wheel wells, invalidate my CPO warranty, etc.
Any and all advice will be appreciated.
Thanks!

All depends on the wheel width and if you have a narrow or wide body 997. With out that info I can't tell you much.

No mistake on your part. Your current NB car is in your signature. For the wheels, it's not an exact science. I've bought wide body fitment wheels from both Champion and HRE and got different offsets between brands. Not by much but enough where it's noticeable.

Here's a specific example I'm considering:
Front: 8.5x19 offset of 45 compared to current 8x19 offset of 57 with tires unchanged at 235/35 19s
Rear: 11x19 offset of 56 compared to current 11x19 offset of 67 with tires unchanged at 295/35 19s
These wheels would push out more than 10mm in the rear and 18mm in the front, if I'm doing my offiset math correctly. That feels like a lot, especially on the fronts, if I don't want to increase rock spray on the rear wheel wells, but have no experience to inform what is a gut reaction.
What do you all think?
Thanks!

are you sure your oem fronts aren't 8.5"? i always thought the stock wheel sizes were 8.5/11

I surfed a lot of forum write-ups before choosing these spacer offsets. I think the use of a 45 net offset in front would probably make the front tires just about flush but would almost certainly result in rubbing issues. I think your back wheel result of 55 is fine. I wouldn't want to go much less than the 53mm offset I have in rear just to make sure I didn't head into ricer territory.
Don't forget that if you change away from the 8 or 11 inch standard wheel size, that also affects your offsets by half the additional width (measured in mm).

Is your car lowered too?
No rubbing at all at the rear, once in a blue moon at the front. Very light rub on the wheel well liner at full lock and when on an uneven surface. Happens so rarely and so light it isn't worth worrying about. With 235s and not lowered I would be very surprised if you would get any rubbing at all.

Carrera S II wheels I have on presently are 8x19 up front with 57 offset. Owners manual does list 8.5x19 with 55 offset as an option when paired with 11.5x19 with 67 offset (running 305s instead of 295s).

In general, pushing the wheel out an additional 15mm is the "safe" maximum, so the 18mm on the front is pushing the limit. However, since PhilD has the same wheel dimensions you are looking to get and he has minimal rubbing in the front, you should be good to go.
Oh yeah, make sure you you start a new thread and post pics of the new wheels after you get them mounted.

PhilD, really great looking 997...nicely done!
Schepee007, you've got some good advice here...my fault on not seeing your signature withC2S in it but was posting from iPhone and missed it. The 101tires site I have used a lot before. For my track wheels I used a 9" wide front with et50 offset and along with my gt3 lower control arms the fronts were pushed right out to the fender edge. With stock Carrera front LCA's you can easily do what PhilD did with 8.5 wide fronts.

Offsets
Attachment 810555I have a C2s but put some widebody "classic" wheels on it for winter (much easier to clean). The factory offsets are 57F/68R but in '09 they quit "stamping" them on the wheel. Tires are 235F/295R. I kept that tire size for winter but have 51 (WB) rear offsets. This is the equivalent of having 16mm spacers in rear. Sharkwerks recommends 15mm so I'm only 1mm wider. I have no issues and it looks awesome. Fronts are still 57.
