Default installing microphone someplace near muffler..

997.2S - I want to hook up a mic to my iphone to use with Harrys lap timer next track season. Need a way to get from the cabin to the engine bay or muffler area. I did a search and the way I found will work for a wire but not for a wire with a mic in one end and a phono connector on the other. I can live with a temp solution that will be done the day before a track day..

what do you mean it wont work "for a wire with a mic in one end and a phono connector on the other"? you mean the opening is too small or something? i'm thinking the only way thru the tub is via the ECU tray under the back shelf carpeting (and BOSE speaker if you have one). i've fiddled around under there - never looked for pass thru but i'm assuming there's got to be one for all the other wires/harnesses that have got to pass thru there.

Yea. Too thick

Was thinking of worse case running it out and under the car and just closing the door on the wire but need a place to hide it from road debris and wind

I'm a recording engineer. I think you'll have a hard time finding a good mic that will be able to handle the extreme volume. Good mics usually require 48v phantom power and I'm not sure if the iPhone is capable of providing such power. The exhaust is going to output a SPL of well over 130 db at the tip and that's will cause most mics to distort.

I have non-professional experience with mics (college thesis + worked at recording studio + used to compose), and would like to get your opinion on what mic to use. From the limited knowledge I have, it seems like one needs a "dynamic mic" instead of a condenser mic. Its more durable, able to handle higher dbA.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but hopefully this info can help the OP too.

My application is slightly different, I am sending the Audio via RF (probably over an FM freq) instead of over a wire. I would like to permanently mount the mic _ RF circuit near exhaust. So needs to be durable and handle the elements. I have already figured out all the pieces except the microphone type and placement. Also, I am only able to supply 12v and trying to keep the entire package as small as possible to fit in that space.

Thanks!

To be honest, this isn't my area of expertise since I am a studio engineer. I know the thing to look for is the max db threshold for whatever mic you're looking at. This is a pretty popular device as you can also connect external mics to it. The other concern is wind noise. You need to block any wind from rushing over the mic or you'll get a blown out recording. I've heard some guys actually mount the mic in a ceramic coffee cup with foam and attach it to the muffler. I'll do some research and try and get some more detailed answers. I know that this isn't an easy task.

Yep that is true. My drums can cause a lot of mics to distort..LOL...Hella...we should talk..I am a drummer. Will you be down at NAMM in Anaheim in 2 weeks. If so I will be in the Zildjian both most of the time working.

Maybe my approach is wrong then, I want semi clean engine/exhaust sound rather then nothing but wind. is there a way to mount a mic inside the car someplace? we run with the windows open and no place is safe aside from say the center console storage bin - which I guess I should try, just dont know what sound Ill catch in there.

The sound in the youtube vid is close enough, how was that achieved?

this is the mic this is the mic

You are dealing with a serious sound challenge. Too much wind to disturb the sounds of the engine. I tried it myself some time ago and you can see (hear) the results...microphone placed remotely back with engine.

There is a thread I came across some months ago in the 991 forum in which the owner recorded the exhaust sound. I thought it sounded pretty good.
