Default Going to Germany for a few days in Jan... what to buy?

Curious what Porsche related items to get from a short visit to DE? Anything that's hard to find around here?

Should you be tempted to buy anything, be ready for sticker shock. You will be paying in Euros and the 'ol dollar ain't what it used to be.

If you ride a motorcycle, consider a european spec moto helmet (not legally sold in the US). I've found that they're lighter and have a smaller outside diameter than US spec helmets due to different regulations.

Other than that, I struggle to think of anything that you can't buy on the internet for cheaper.

Take any BMW to the autobahn for three hours. Push it as far as you can. Money well spent.

I knew a co-worker who would bring back a mini-keg of German beer for her husband. Packed it in her checked in bags.

Which cities are you going to? The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart has lots of unique items to chose from.

Believe it or not, you may not do as well buying anything there and expecting a deal. Unfavorable exchange rates and a 19% Mehrwertsteuer can really chew up any deals.

I am not looking for deals, I know things won't be cheaper. Just items that may be hard to find or not available here. Things like well made tools, or European parts for 997, etc...

Check our Craigslist in Germany! Good place to find hard to find items while you are there!
As far as Porsche stuff, the museum and factory really do not have stuff different than what can be brought at our dealerships! Enjoy your trip!

Where in Germany are you headed? If near Koeln, you might rent a car and drive the Nordschleife. It is often open to the public.

That is a good idea but if it's not allowed in the U.S. then you still have to get it through customs (they are pretty savvy on what you can and can't bring in, it is their job). Of course if you choose not to declare you'll only have a problem if you are selected to be searched.

I agree with the folks who say there really is nothing you particularly need/want that isn't available easier/cheaper here or via the internet. The Porsche museum and factory are well worth visiting, but the museum shop doesn't have anything you can't get here. Yes, there are factory spec parts only available in Europe, but those have to be part of a new build and can't be purchased from a dealer or at the factory. And they're all available on ebay anyway.

I was just there and bought the official Porsche Museum book, 50 years 911, Motorbuch Verlag 911x911. All you want to know about the 911 is in there . All texts are in 5 languages. Price is Euro 39.95.
