2nd Gear

I've seen several posts on here on 1st gear and what a pain it can be to engage at times. I don't have much of an issue with 1st but 2nd is almost always a bear. When it gets warmed up it sometimes gets more fluid, but most of the time feels like there is a hitch or two on the way down. Anybody else have that issue?

What year and model?

I have the same issue with 2nd gear 2009 C2S. Two issues:
1 - Very notchy going into 2nd when cold to where you are not 100% sure you got it; and,
2 - After engaged, can be "clacky" when hot... letting the clutch out some times can lead to "gears tightening up against each other".... sorry, can't describe it better than that.

Issue with 1st gear hot or cold, is that it just appears locked out... not aligned inside. I pop the clutch and get things spinning and or drop into another gear then back to 1st and it slides in fine. Seems to happen when there are impatient folks behind me.

I had the exact same 1st & 2nd gear issues with my 2000 S Boxster that used a 911 transmission. When cold, under say 32 degrees, sometimes I wouldn't get the second click and it would pop out of gear.

Honestly, I think it is all part of the charm.

Peace

Mine's a 05 997S. Agree with the part of the charm comment just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one experiencing the charm. Thanks.

Same thing here. 2nd gear is is strange in that I'd assume that the resistance felt going into gear would be sluggish due to the viscosity of the cold gearbox fluid, yet the resistance feels almost mechanical. But, when the car has fully warmed up, the shift action is reasonable.

Same experience here as well with shifting into 2nd gear from 1st.

Its a common 997 feel...Every 997 I've driven is the same.

I've never had a problem from 1 > 2 on my '09 C2S but 1st can be tough once in a while.

sometimes i have the same issue, on buddies c2s getting into 1st can be TERRIBLY stiff.

ive pondered changing the tranny fluid to help with the smoother shifts but i think i read that the tranny fluid is good for 12 years or 120,000 miles or something crazy so i havent bothered. i should prolly look into making sure those crazy numbers are correct.

I also have a 2009 C2S and have also had difficulties at times shifting into first gear and from first to second gear, most specifically when the car is cold. What I have found is that the more I drive her the smoother she runs overall. When I drive it daily vs. it sitting in the garage for several days, things just seem to operate better overall.

I've have/had the same problem. Amongst others.... I was going to buy a Numeric Racing shifter and cables. No need now as I just sold my C2S an hour ago. I'll pull out the old 993 and drive it until I find a REAL modern Porsche to buy.

I've had this issue with my 2007 C2...going into 1st is a little tricky even when the engine & oil temps are optimal. Spoke to my Indy and he suggested a transmission fluid change as an option.

My 09 CS2 had the same issues. Notchy when cold and better when warm.

Same here on my 08C2S. Went with a mechanic from the dealership as my car still has CPO and the guy said the same things as the other comments above. I never go into 1st unless stopped cause that's nearly impossible. 2nd gear I live with. Also asked the local independent shop and they said the same thing...

Trying giving the throttle a little blip when shifting from neutral to first with the clutch in. It's become second nature for me. Goes in to first gear smoothly every time.

Yup, a pseudo double-clutch helps.

I found that I can get it into first while moving if I double clutch (let the clutch out when passing through neutral). I do this quite a bit now while in stupid city stupid traffic stupid lights stupid people situations.
