Default Rev limiter question

My new-to-me 997.2 had logged zero over-revs when it was PPId before I bought it 5 weeks ago. I bounced off the rev limiter in 1st gear today (MT). It cut the fuel just before (~<0.5 s) the clutch was depressed for the up shift. Is this a range 1 or range 2 over-rev?

IIRC, the ranges are in 500rpm increments. I want to guess the limiter would keep it within range 1. Were you in sport/sport plus mode? I believe that is more lenient in cut off which might allow further up redline, but I think still within R1. This are from my own observations.

I could be wrong but I believe that Range 1 is just below the limiter, Range 2 is bumping the limiter and it's possible to get into Range 3 by slamming the limiter.

997.2 Over rev ranges:
Range 1: 7300-7500 RPM
Range 2: 7500-7700 RPM
Range 3: 7700-7900 RPM
Range 4: 7900-8400 RPM
Range 5: 8400-9500 RPM
Range 6: 9500-11000 RPM

Classification of over rev ranges:
RANGE 1 Maximum engine speed exceeded; engine damage very unlikely.
RANGE 2 Maximum engine speed exceeded; engine damage unlikely.
RANGE 3 Maximum engine speed exceeded; engine damage possible.
RANGE 4 Maximum engine speed clearly exceeded; engine damage probable.
RANGE 5 Maximum engine speed very clearly exceeded; engine damage very probable.
RANGE 6 Engine damage has generally occurred.

Overspeed events are stored in the DME control unit.

The following values are also recorded:
1) Number of ignition attempts in each overspeed range
2) Status of the hour meter during the last overspeed event

Thanks, do you know if the number of launch starts, are also recorded/available from the DME.

No I don't. You might want to do a search of this and the Boxster/Cayman forums.

Thanks all. Based on your responses, I suspect it was range 1 with a possibility of range 2. Even if it was range 2, at 0.5 s, it would be less than 200 ignitions . I see a Durametric tool in my future.

U r fine. A few Range #1 and maybe some Range #2's. Just don't make a habit out of it. Don't do this on a down shift.

You get used to it. I banged mine off the limiter a few times before I got used to how quickly it snaps to redline in 1st and 2nd.

Amen Brother!

It's probably a little scary the first time it happens and you worry that you "hurt" your engine. Really though, if you over-rev on the up-shift and the limiter kicks in, it's doing what it is meant to and protecting your engine. Of course, it is probably a bad idea to do it on a regular basis.

I wouldn't be surprised if a new DME report still shows zero range 1 over revs. Do you have access to a Durametric? It'll show the over revs.

I didn't think bouncing off the limiter on an "upshift' stored a result in the DME.

If it gets into range 1 it will show on the DME.
