Default Flat Tire Again!

Well, this is getting frustrating. I've gotten two flat tires within 6 months and I am really getting tired of getting a flatbed to haul away my car to get it fixed.

Due to weather, time of day, and location, leak not being visible, etc. the fixes using goop, air compressor, plugs, etc. wouldn't have helped me with these two flats.

I have a 2009 C2 Cab with 19 inch wheels. I have seen several posts of people buying, 98 99 00 01 02 03 04 PORSCHE BOXSTER SPARE DONUT WHEEL & TIRE 17X3-1/2 986 # as a spare tire for their 997.2.

Can anybody verify that they've used this spare and that it didn't screw up the transmission or anything else.

Get the right sized spare... don't take a risk with the tranny. Call suncoastparts.com and they'll verify for you if the boxster spare will work. BTW, after getting my spare the flat tire issue has magically disappeared. I think of it as a 30 lbs flat tire "rabbits foot "in the frunk. GL.

I have a spare tire and there are a bunch of threads on it. I even posted a youtube video:
of how it fits in the front trunk on my C2S. I have a 997.1 and I haven't had to use the spare yet, so I'm not much help with your specific questions. As far as the transmission goes, wouldn't you only care about the outer diameter of the tire? I think if it's close, you'll have nothing to worry about.
Since you don't have an S, the boxster or 996 wheen should easily fit over your calipers.
I set mine up a few years ago, so I don't remember if I only tried it on the back, or if I also tried it on the front.
Hope that helps
Jack

Thanks, I'll take a look at your video. Ideally, I would like the spare to fit in the trunk.

USMC_DS1, I took a look at their website and it looks like the newer spare only fits in the jump seats and it is $1,000.

Does anybody use run flats? I keep hearing that using run flats will really affect the handling, etc. on our car.

Hmm, I've had one flat 2yrs ago when a nail got through the left rear... I however cannot imagine taking all of the frunk space or rear seat just for that rare occasion this may happen!

These are the parts I bought from Suncoast before they put together a kit. This is the collapsible spare.

987-722-061-01 Tire cover (old part number 987-722-061-00)
996-362-020-04 Emergency wheel (old part number 996-362-020-03)
996-722-101-00 Emergency wheel insert
996-721-211-00 Jack

The particular cover I bought has straps so you can tie it down in the frunk. My solution for tying it down is at the link. Still have room in the frunk for other things.

Hope this helps

I picked up a near new(never inflated) spare tire kit from another forum member at a much reduced price. BTW, once the spare has been inflated I understand that it is near impossible to shrink it back to it's original diminutive form... although I wonder if a venturi value would get it close. The kit fits nicely in the frunk of my 997.1 S and still has some room left over for groceries. I mainly use it for the long hauls out of town. Within Austin it's not really necessary as I'm typically within a few miles of a tire shop that could easily patch a tire plus a flatbed would get me back home. BTW, goop will make a mess of your wheel well... It's been a year since I had a flat and I'm still finding/cleaning up where the hole in the tire flung out that stuff. Next time I get a flat I plan on doing a roadside patch if I don't have the spare kit with me.

If I remember correctly, for a rear flat I believe that the manual says to put the front tire on the back and the spare on the front.

Comparison of Boxster spare with inflatable.

check eBay for deals on these. Search for: 996 Porsche spare

I bought mine locally from craigslist. A local performance shop was gutting a 996 for a customer and selling off all the 'jink'
I got the tire, jack, foam insert, and cover all for $50! I think anything under $200 would be a good deal, for all that

Thanks everyone for the posts, part numbers, ideas, etc. I appreciate the help! This car is my daily driver and I guess I am increasing the odds of getting flat tires because I drive it so much. So, I'll probably get some type of spare and a tire repair\plug kit to cover most situations.

Jack, you got a deal for all that "jink". I want to say that it cost me ~$500 for my junk.

Is this spare worth the extra weight, lost of frunk space, especially when you probably can't replace the wheel if you have ANY passenger with you ? I think your punctured wheel needs to sit in the front seat, especially the rear wheel. I have the foldable GT2 carbon sports seat and I am pretty sure neither front nor rear wheels can get thru the opening into the rear seat. IMO, this spare wheel solution is only suitable for people whose journey dictates that they must be self sufficient. You shouldn't be driving this car thru/to places where you cannot get help anyway. I know it is a frustrating situation but the hassle calling for help might just be less than the disadvantages mentioned above. Hey, and I am not one who's not seen my fair share of flats!
