IMS 'fix' options poll

Hi,

I decided to put together a poll to check what is it people are actually doing in regard to this issue on 997.1 cars

PS. option 'I own a post-2006 car with servicable bearing, did nothing ' should be 'I own a post-2006 car with NON-servicable bearing, did nothing. Cannot see how to edit poll item, sorry.

I sold my 04 and bought a Turbo.

I have a 2006 S with the larger bearing design. I change my oil every five thousand miles and regularly send samples to Blackstone for analysis. I use Motul X-cess 8100 05/40 and have had great testing results from the lab.

Other than that I just wait for the oil to reach temp and then I give it the beans.

I have a late year 2005 and when I went to install the LN bearing I discovered that it already had the updated factory bearing. It's a reminder that the older bearing design doesn't apply to ALL cars from the 2005 year.

Another '06 S owner here and my third Porsche with an IMS. 5k oil changes, mindful of temps before enjoying the rev's, basically just caring for it as I would any other sports car. I honestly don't even think about the bearing. An overblown (no pun) scenario IMO.

It's pretty simple... if you got post-2006, you don't need to do anything, if you own pre-2006, one should look at options available, and to most likely do the upgrade during clutch change.

Yes (actually late 2005), Yes & Yes (X-Cess and Millers oils).

As jca3 stated above the later 2005 MY cars have the updated bearing. I did see an engine number cut off posted on here once that was supposedly when they switched over. I have a 01/05 Production date and am only 300 engines away from that cut-off. Assuming that information was accurate.

My Indy recommends the LN upgrade at 60k miles....I'm at 48k now. So currently doing nothing, but I have a decision to make in 2014.

I have a 2008 S with the larger bearing design. I change my oil every three thousand miles and regularly send samples to Blackstone for analysis. I just switched to Motul X-cess 8100 05/40. I've also added the third rad and deep oil pan and baffle from FVD. I also wait for the oil to reach operating temp before any aggressive driving.

CORSASCHNELL 07-10-2013 08:44 PM

I have a 2006, change oil regularly, warm up the car properly and drive it hard. At this point not concerned with IMS issue and plan to do nothing.

Rotmilky 07-10-2013 08:52 PM

In my case, I have an 05. I plan to change it out when I replace the clutch. Clutch it still working fine...so I keep the oil changed and wait for the oil temps to warm up before going over 4000 RPMs.

utkinpol 07-10-2013 09:03 PM

i am on '06 car, also change oil each 5k miles, magnetic plus has no metal parts so far.
car got to 63k miles so I am indecisive of what to do. DOF solution is $800, labor to install it roughly $1k. I am not sure if it is worth doing. will wait a bit more

cvtbenhogan 07-10-2013 11:00 PM

3k oil changes and inspect oil filter for metal bits. 225f warm up before going over 4k. Avoid short trips when possible. Will switch to 5/40 motul on next oil change.

With pre-2006 and post-2006 options as the only set of options, there's no choices for people who actually own a 2006.

Redline911 07-11-2013 01:03 AM

To the 4 of you who responded that you did the LN upgrade. I personally, and I'm sure the forum, would benefit if you shared your experience. What was your mileage at the time? How much did it cost, parts/labor? Was motor pulled, or done with motor in the car?

Thanks
