Default DIY oil change and aftermarket warranty

How would a DIY oil change affect an aftermarket warranty? Should I be even considering this during the warranty period?

I intend to wirte a note stating the date and the mileage and attach the receipts for oil, crush washer and oil filter insert.

It is not legal for a manufacturer to require maintenance to be performed by a dealer. As long as you can document the maintenance. For an aftermarket warranty this may be different from a legal perspective but doubtful that they would vary from this standard. The only way to know for sure is to check the fine print from the specific warranty provider.

Some aftermarket warrant providers require you to have a logbook to document all DIY maintenance which I find reasonable

From the ones I have seen state "regular service from a dealer, shop or proficient mechanic". That proficiency thing is the gray area. I do my own and I am under warranty.

I'll call them and find out I guess.

One thing that I started doing for added documentation with oil changes is I send a sample off to Blackstone Labs and get an oil analysis done. Besides giving me some insight to my oil quality and composition, it also provides good 3rd party confirmation of the work done.

I also agree with JW911 that you cannot be forced to use a particular service vendor for your work, but the burden of proof may fall onto you to demonstrate any warranty claim is not the result of your DIY work.

Good idea about Blackstone. I'll do that.
