Resurrecting this thread to see if anyone has tried these pre-cut mesh pieces for 997. And, if so, was bumper removal required (I bet they could be manipulated and inserted behind the bumper and fastened as RaceTwin suggested (cleanest method I have seen).

Made mine from scratch today. They are painted and drying. No bumper removal on my 997.2. Pictures to follow tomorrow.

Anyone here with a manual (or non-third 3rd radiator equipped auto) try to install a mesh grill in the center section? I have a manual 997.2 C2S and I was looking at grills, however Rennline's website claims that there is “no known place to affix [the center grill on a manual/non-3rd radiator equipped car] and there’s no functional reason to install it.”

First, is it really true that there’s no function? The center inlet feeds air to the radiators on the side, so I would think debris, leaves, rocks, etc. can still make their way to those radiators if you don’t block off the center section. Am I wrong? Or is there some aerodynamic principle I’m unaware of that would prevent debris from making its way from the center inlet to the radiators?

Second, is it true that you can’t install a center grill on on manual/sans-3rd radiator 997 as Rennline claims? Are the bumpers different or is there some other piece of trim around the radiator that is required in order to affix the grill? And has anyone still managed to mount a center grill on a 3rd radiator-less car? If so, what kind of grills did you use (DIY, other brand, something else) and what did you use to secure it (tape, zip ties, clip/brackets, etc)?

I liked the cross brace in there the best, but here it was without.

I'm four months into ownership of an '09 997.2 C2, and did some homemade screens with black plastic gutter mesh. I've seen videos on cleaning the condensers and radiators so decided to do that. There's other DIYs on removing the bumper so I'll skip that part. It's tedious but worth it when you see how much debris is in there. I recommend putting at lease the front end up and taking off the front wheels to make it easier. Have a bucket ready for the windshield/headlight washer fluid unless you have a proper clamp or plug. With the bumper clear you can remove the air ducts. The AC condensers are secured to the radiators by one 8mm screw so with that removed you can (gently now!) slide the condenser out of the slots in radiator and move it forward enough to get vacuum extension in there. Reassemble in reverse order.

Left condenser. 8mm securing screw is at right.

Move condenser out of tracks and pull slightly forward.

With air ducts in place you won't see this trash at bottom of radiators. This is where the leaks start.

This topic triggered me to do the same, only a slightly different approach. even though you hardly notice it on the pics I did not want to see a tie wrap.
First made a template and cut the mesh (keeping it about 0,5 cm wider than the edges of the template, enough room on the inside of the grille:

Then I fitted the mesh and took two tie wraps I slid through the slots in the upper edge of the grille:

And another one through one of the slots that used to hold the vertical bracket:

Finally I drilled a small hole underneath the inner end of the lower louvre:

And here the result. Unless you are lying on the floor and looking up you do not see a tie wrap, happy with it:

Beezztie - looks really good. It's a shame that Porsche didn't foresee the lack of guards as an obvious problem.

They are a joke at best and represent false advertising at worst. Save yourself the upcharge for the fake-"precut" grills and buy the standard sheets. The "precut" grills are roughly the same shape as the opening but about two inches larger all the way around. You still need to cut and fit. Ask me how I know.

So I ended up doing this after having some free time today. Used the following materials (if you already had tin snips, then this mod costs less than $6 USD):
  1. CBST09's template from this thread
  2. Tin/Metal snips (~$12) from Home Depot
  3. Black zip ties (~$2)
  4. Amerimax Metal Black Lock-in Gutter Guard ($3.08 as of this writing)
The thing about the Amerimax gutter guard is that it's metal, it's already black, and ironically, the width of the guard fits EXACTLY the width of the template. One of these will make two grill meshes, with some material left over. I'm still playing with the zip tie positioning, but I definitely feel like I wasted a lot of money buying a precut mesh for my 981S nearly two years ago.

Nice! Why someone would pay +$200 for these things is beyond me

Yes, I've tried these before. Great guy that sells them out of Texas. Same installation instructions, and no, bumpers are not required for removal (but you risk scratching up the inside of the intake holes).

Just take a marker, a piece of paper, and draw a rough outline. It takes about 3 minutes.
