Thinking of going to a 997
I have a 1989 Carrera SA with 22,000 miles. Car is pristine and unmolested. It does need to be serviced (valve adj., brake caliper overhaul, plugs and such) but is in amazing original condition. I bought it six years ago as my first Porsche. It had 13,000 miles on it at the time I bought it. So 10,000 miles and six years later I've started to think I'd like a modern 911.
I picked up a 2013 Subaru BRZ this past summer to drive and find I like it quite a lot. The '89 has been sitting unused this year (safe in my climate controlled garage) while I drive the BRZ. So...thinking of selling the '89 Carrera and the BRZ to move into a 997.1 or even a 997.2 I know I want a coupe with 6MT. Not sure about base vs. S yet.
I know the IMS issue has been beaten to death but I still have a bit of concern about getting a 997.1 vs. 997.2 I've driven a 997 a couple of times but that was three years ago. Going to Chicago for Christmas and I'm going to stop by a dealer or two and look at and hope to drive a pre-owned 997 or two.
I'm not sure about parting with my '89 but will need to do so (along with the BRZ) if I'm going to buy a 997. Anyway just wanted to stick my foot in the door here and I'll post my impressions of the 997 soon. I would welcome any advise or thoughts on my plans.

If you were to sell your '89 Carrera, what would you be looking to get for it?

That is a tough question. I had an ongoing discussion a few weeks ago on Pelican about trying to set a value on my Carrera.
After a lot of back and forth it came to my car being worth low 30's as is or mid-upper 30's+ all serviced, a turn key car. It needs a full service and new tires. I have the tires and a new AGM style battery to install.
I know I have a special car but not sure if I want to move on to a 997. That is why I intend to look at and drive some 997's while in the Windy City over the Christmas holidays. I've not had the chance to look at or drive a 997 in my neck of the woods as there is scant opportuntity to do so. In no hurry about all of this.

My first 911 was an '89 911 Silver Anniversary cab in black satin over linen interior - great car.
The G50 3.2's are fantastic 911's and definite classics but you're in for a treat moving to a 911 with potentially 30+ years of R&D. Good luck with your search!

That was a nice '89! Good price for a car with 119,000 miles!
I know with my car since the miles are so low it will harder to sell. First of all the low miles commands a higher price but if the car is driven too much the miles distract from the value somewhat.

Keep in mind during your Chicago test drives that the ride will likely feel pretty harsh if you are driving cars with summer compound tires...I hear and feel a real difference between my snow tires and summer tires when the weather gets cold.
I have owned both 997.1 and 997.2, loved them both...cosmetically very similar, but there are mechanical/performance differences.

pristine air-cooled Carrera in a climate controlled garage? I would not sell an appreciating car to pay for a depreciating one. Period.
Sell the BRZ and get a CPO 997 as your beater. Or an enthusiast owned 997 with IMS upgrade.

BMWDavid, i did a similar switch recently too. I had a 1987 Carrera garage queen that i had owned for 17 years. It was in great condition, but it wasn't meeting my needs anymore. It didn't have shoulder belts in the back for my kids, nor the creature comforts for everyday driving, so i sold it this past spring and then started looking for a 997.1S. It took me a few months, but now the 997.1S i have is my daily driver with child seats in the back for my kids.
Part of my issue was that i had babied the 1987 so much, that i couldn't really enjoy it enough. I live in New England, so it was also in storage for almost half the year.
Now i have a car that i drive year round (winter tires), that i'm not afraid to drive in the rain or snow. I went with a 2007 to minimize the impact of IMS. The car has definitely met my needs, except the day that the water pump failed and left me stranded on the side of the road for a few hours.
I don't regret the switch at all, although a few friends were begging me to keep my old car. If i had the garage space, i may have considered, but i don't have the space for it, and it would just have been driven less and less.
Good luck with your search. As you'll hear from others.. there's a decent inventory of 997s available, so don't settle on the options/colors/etc that you're looking for.
