It happened.. a stone chip on my front windshield!

The chip is tiny (about the size of a pinhead) and on the passenger's side. Should I just ignore it or get it fixed? Has anybody tried Safelite or have any other suggestions? If I have the windshield repaired can you tell or will it be basically good as new?

SO irritated:grr: too many trucks on the 15 freeway to Vegas!

Fahrer 12-03-2012 08:07 PM

At about 2500 miles, I got a significant star on my windshield.... about 1.5 inches in dia.

The good news is that I did not get a dent on the hood of my car. I consider myself lucky.

I got the star repaired by Safelite with acrylic resin. Two years later it does not look as good but it was free of cost and I can now decide to replace the windshield when the next event occurs. If it is the size of a pinhead I would just forget about it!:)

kev_song 12-03-2012 08:20 PM

I took one to the windshield this summer. I'm not sure how it works in CA, but in MA the is no deducible for glass. I tried Safelight on another car I owned, but the chip was in the line of sight and even filled it bothered me.

ecostellodo 12-03-2012 09:40 PM

As long as the chip is not in your line of sight, I wouldn't worry about it. I've had my rock chip for 2 years now.

Besides, as soon as you get your new windshield, a new rock will find you.

Spokane5150 12-03-2012 10:14 PM

If it's in your line of vision just replace it. Make sure you ask for a tech that has done Porsche in the past. I like the piano wire method better than the saw. Mine was done at the beginning of the year and they did a good job. Safelite....

Lurgee 12-03-2012 11:59 PM

Thanks for the suggestions all. I guess I'll wait to get another rock chip before I have Safelite repair it. I should feel lucky that it isn't in my line of sight.

Ecostellodo, you're right on the money when you said that a new rock will inevitably find me if I replaced my windshield, haha!

aaks38 12-04-2012 12:03 AM

Usually when something like this happens, i just get loctite bullseye windshield repair. Its about 8 bucks and not too hard to install yourself. You want to do this soon though before temperature and moisture could settle in and induce web cracks

w00tPORSCHE 12-04-2012 12:08 AM

Install clearplex. After my windshield cracked, I replaced it and protected it with clearplex. Now the clearplex
is all beaten up and needs replacement but the OEM windshield is pristine underneath due to the protection. The clearplex is even avulsed in one area by a huge stone that would have without a doubt destroyed my replaced windshield.

Edgy01 12-04-2012 01:56 AM

It is the first of many. The alternative is worse--having the windshield replaced. The factory seal is always the best.

yemenmocha 12-04-2012 11:10 AM

I always repair them if they're not in line of sight and not by the edges. If you leave it alone there's a decent chance it will spread.

I had to replace my windshield first week of ownership. Big star pattern, center of vision driver's side. OEM replacement has lasted 6 years, though it has many mini pits that glisten in the right light.

sullivas 12-04-2012 01:46 PM

If it's too small they won't be able to do anything to fix it, I have the same problem. Think I going to install the Clearplex, around ~$200

Quadcammer 12-04-2012 03:27 PM

the head of a pin and you're complaining?

are you sure its just not a little pit?

I wouldn't worry about it.

Techbod 12-04-2012 10:47 PM

Is it me, or do flying rocks, thoughtless drivers, and trouble swarm around P-Cars - its a great thing my horn works, it's been getting a workout around L.A.

sullivas 12-05-2012 01:48 PM

I had a guy dump the ice from his Big Gulp out his pickup truck window with me behind him. Those haters...

I had Safelite do a fill repair on a star chip on my stepdaughter's Volvo on the passenger side, and it looks like they did nothing to it. I know I can't expect miracles, but I sort of wish I'd have gotten the screen replaced, now.

jets 12-06-2012 11:59 PM

I remember buying a Prelude years ago. First drive out with it I got smacked hard with a rock and chipped the windshield. That sucked.

littlemilla3 12-07-2012 12:27 AM

If it is small, just have a company fill it; your insurance might cover it sans deductible as well.

daberlin 12-07-2012 02:41 AM

$1100 for a Porsche windshield. Ouch.

Precision Auto 01-27-2013 02:58 PM

Guys! Check out the current Group Buy for ClearPlex in the Marketplace. I am offering a significant discount until January 31st!

Spokane5150 01-27-2013 05:55 PM

Better the windshield than the paint imho.

That is exactly why I just joined the Group Buy, I would rather replace my Clearplex every 5 years than get a pitted or even worse replacement windshield.

Check with Trackcar on this board....he tracks 20X year, uses 2 ClearPlex Protections Films per year, 0 windshield replacements to date!!!

Our insurance (USAA) covers the entire cost of a chip repair. It's still somewhat visible after the repair but it will stop any spreading and you still have the factory windshield. We have had several such repairs done and all of them have worked well. None on the 911 yet, though it's only a matter of time.

Had a dime size chip in the field of vision about 6 months ago. USAA replaced the entire windshield at no cost and no deductible (OEM). No discussion about repairs as an alternative either. This may be Florida specific but can't hurt to check.

USMC_DS1 01-29-2013 01:14 AM

I need to check my insurance policy re coverage for the possibility of windshield replacement... had a rock flung out by an 18 wheeler two lanes over hit my windshield a few months back. Only made a small pit but the real damage was my paranoia re trucks on the road. So I'll be trying out ClearPlex as soon as it arrives. The GB makes for a great deal. Plus changing out the windshield has it's own associated risk factors.

Spokane5150 01-29-2013 09:16 AM

Pulled that clear bra off a few months ago. The finish is fantastic. I didn't realize how bad that clear bra made my car look. No more bra for me.:burnout:

Devil Boy 01-29-2013 03:02 PM

I have USAA too and since moving to AZ I opted for the full glass coverage. My 997 windshield was already very frosted from before and I think it's only a matter of time before I get a good hit from a rock. My Chevy pickup is my DD and I've gotten at least 5-6 chips in it...3 in one week driving on the 202. I'm waiting until it's really cracked before I replace it. As soon as I get a new windshield for the 997 I would like to get that Clearplex though. Windshields are no deductible with my insurance but I don't want the hassle of replacing it once or twice a year.

State Farm Insurance in Georgia will not pay for windshield repairs, they just replace the windshield with new OEM glass. Only cost has been my $100 deductible. Have had this situation 3-4 times in the last 5 years.

Tiny rock chip

Had this happen today, I have Porsche windshield protection plan so if I want to replace it I can but since it’s so small and I don’t want to deal with replacing then retinting the front, thinking of mobile repair. Mobile repair guy said the two small white blobs will remain, but it will look lot less visible…wwyd?

I'd definitely try for the repair as long as it is not in your direct line of sight.
A good glass tech will clean up the chip with a pick or clean it up with a small drill bit, create a vacuum and suck UV cure epoxy into the void.
It should look better than it does now, but the important thing is that no moisture will get into the chip, so it won't spread.

Typically, your insurance carrier will wave your deductible and pay for the repair.
Might be worth checking.

Hope this helps,
Bill

kenjis992 03-22-2024 04:27 PM

The mobile window guy quoted me $95, with Porsche Windshield protection plan I don’t have to pay for part or labor just the deductible which will be around the same $90-100. With the windshield replacement it would just take longer and I would have to get it retinted, but it would 💯 perfect till the next rock comes hopefully not. Mobile it’s not going to be 💯 maybe 90…

ATX_Native 03-22-2024 06:00 PM

I always fill mine with a chip kit off Amazon.

jfort 03-22-2024 07:27 PM

Replaced mine

USAA paid to replace mine. I demanded OEM glass. The first time Safelite put in looked like ****. I took pictures of other cars to show them t he kind of rubber holds it in. They finally got it right
