Brake job
When does the 997 usually need a brake job? I've got 45k and the pads look ok but I'm developing quite a ridge around the rotors.

I have about 32k and had to do my front ones and I got a warning light on the dash... I also have ridges around the rotors but my indy mechanic shaved the edges around the edges a bit to get some more life from the rotors. I would imagine that you could do the same.

I was told by my Indy he has seen cars get 70000 miles before a complete change of pads and rotors. Basically it is how hard you drive, he said to get the full life is to run until your warning sensor comes on. He said you don't need to panic there is still time "ware" to call and make appt.

Partially to do with how the individual drives. For me approaching a red light I change down gears which slows the car down, other people dip the clutch and brake til stop. Anticipating traffic helps ...

It depends. It depends upon your driving style and your equipment. For example, I have 72,000 miles on my 06 and have quite a bit left on my original pads and no wear on my rotors at all. (Then again, I spent $8000 for PCCBs when I ordered it to defer brake maintenance....)

If you believe the rotors are wearing faster than the pads, you can check the rotor thickness with a micrometer.
The ridge can approach 1mm and the rotors can still be of legal thickness.
I don't bother instead just relying on the brake wear sensor/warning light telling me it is almost time to do the brakes. I ran the Boxster for a long time after the light came on -- several thousand miles at least -- and when I finally got tired of the light being on and did the brakes the pads still had about 1/8" of material left. The sensor makes contact at around 3/16ths of an inch.
As a sanity check, when I have my cars serviced at the dealer the techs always check pad thickness and advise me of the remaining brake pad thickness.

$2500 if you have it done with rotors and pads. $1,000 to $1,200 if you do it yourself. Damper and Spring Kits are a little extra. You will need 8 new caliper bolts. There are excellent DIY and Video to watch. This is a very easy job if you do it yourself.
