OT: HWY speed limit of 85 MPH! Finally!

I sure hope this sets a presedence for other states and provinces (up north), with most cars being very capable of doing 120 MPH, 85 MPH sounds like a great compromise. I'd say 90-95 is very reasonable too, but only in the left lane and to ENFORCE left lane as passing lane just like enforcing speed limit.

they're working on that in Texas, or have already done so..........have not looked as of late....
higher speed limits are a big responsibility......not trying to be a wet blanket lol

Most drivers and most cars are barely safe at 50mph. I would only support higher speed limits if we had tougher standards for drivers.

50km over the stated 100km limit in Ontario will get you car impounded ( if caught racing, car gets crushed )

I'll never see that limit in NY unfortunately .... nanny state

Agreed. Driving down 680 the other day with my kids in the 911 I was able to point out a guy in a trashed Honda accord with duct tape keeping the fender on, driving with earbuds in, smoking a cigarette, air drumming, driving with his knees and going 80 mph.

Needless to say we slowed down, got over a few lanes and put some distance between us.

There are some real idiots out there. The requirements will not toughen up because it means revenue. License fees, gas tax, registration, insurance. The more the merrier.

Yup...and I can't see the highway speed limits rising any time soon either (not here in Nantario anyway).

It's currently 80 mph on some of our toll roads in TX. I like it and we need it for some of those HWY which seem to just go on forever...

That toll road/highway goes right in front of COTA. It is a toll road which goes from I-10 to North of Austin. THe speed in 85 MPH. At the moment it is only 41 miles long. They are looking to put more of these in the state in if this works out.

We see all kinds here as well... the topper for me was a guy recently on a motorcycle, who was TEXTING on his cell while riding.

I bought my current car in Houston and drove it back to PHX.
I10 (non-toll) was posted 80 mph through west Texas. 10 over was traffic flow.
Trouble is west Texas goes on forevarrrrr........

Does Montana have a speed limit yet or still "safe & prudent"?

sjfehr 10-23-2012 10:16 PM

Virginia law says it's automatic reckless driving, with up to 6 months jailtime, for speeds 80mph or faster, even in a 70mph zone! 20 over is automatic reckless too. 75 in a 55 zone? Goin' to jail, buddy!

Virginia law really needs to get changed.

TNR911 10-23-2012 10:30 PM

I'm all for higher speed limits. But what I would really like to see is an enforcement campaign to ticket everyone just cruising in the fast lane without passing. Or anyone driving in the fast lane with no traffic in the slower lanes.

Edgy01 10-24-2012 02:15 AM

Nevada used to have no limit during the daytime. When the 55 mph limit was federally mandated all they did in Nevada was wave at you to slow down a little. Those were the days.
