Default Planning a trip out West

I plan to take my son out west next month in the Porsche, and was seeking some advice. I plan to ship the car to Strong Porsche in Salt Lake "for an oil change". Then pick it up, drive up to Yellow Stone and along Beartooth Parkway, then fly back home to North Carolina. Any suggestions on reasonably priced shipping companies, and maybe some roads in those areas?

I'll second the intercity suggestion.

You'll also want to make the shipping plans sooner rather than later as I know many shipping companies, intercity included, get very busy in August shipping cars to/from Monterey.

Made that drive from SLC to Yellow Stone years ago. You'll go through some beautiful countryside and about 8 hours of drive. Some nice winding roads along the Snake River and beautiful vista in Grand Teton before going into Yellow Stone.

Beartooth drive is amazing, highly recommend. Be very careful driving at dawn and dusk. Deer everywhere.... and the occasional cow herd.

I really don't have enough time, or want to do 35 hours of drive time just to get there. This is my vacation, so it's not meant to be stressful.

I know I made this same trip with my Dad in the 70s in his MG A. Hope it hasn't changed too much.

Over the last 15 yeasts I have made the trip about 10 times. Driving from Charleston SC each time. Seven on a Harley Road King, twice in a BMW MZ 3 and the last time in my 2010 C2S. Took about 2weeks each time. What a great way to see America. The triangle from Cody to Red Lodge to Cook City using the Chief Joseph and the Bear Tooth is one of the great rides. Many others too. Have a great trip.

Also check with DeMoise trucking (Greer, SC) (www.demoise.com). I've used them and so have many of my friends, fantastic service!

I just made the Denver to Bigfork drive via Red Lodge to Cooke City to Livingston, MT last week. I highly recommend spending the night in Livingston; Anthony Bourdain has done a segment on the Second Street Bistro and the historic Murray Hotel is next door.

Red Lodge has the Pollard Hotel, another renovated historic hotel.

As mentioned, the Sunlight basin / Beartooth Pass loop is superb.

The Lamar Valley in Yellowstone runs between Cooke City and Gardiner, and has a high concentration of elk and buffalo, and you'll stand a good chance of seeing bear and maybe wolves. Livingston, MT is about 70 miles from the Gardiner entrance to the park.

Jackson, WY has The Wort Hotel as another option if you want to enter the park via the South entrance.

Don't forget to consider making the one day drive (each way) up to Glacier Nt'l Park. The Flathead Valley has some great dining and hotel options, and the Going to the Sun road almost rivals Beartooth Pass.
