Dealers have about $1500-2000 left in profit when wholesaling a car. The dealership is in the business to make money no matter if they retail or wholesale the car. It is very rare that any dealership can t-off on the sale of a car.

There are a total of (14) 2005 911's on Manheim. You may have a difficult time finding a C2S 2005 below $50,000.

Is the "steeling wheel" thrown in when you get a "steel" of a price on a car?

I bought my '05 Carrera from a Porsche dealership. Black, full leather, 19" S lobster-claw wheels w/colored crests, Bose, bi-xenons, dual power seats w/driver's memory, sport steering wheel. Just over 20,000 miles and CPO. Paid US$46K. 3 1/2 years ago in early 2009! Seeing what MY05 are selling for today makes me a very happy camper. I never thought the most economical car I've ever owned would be a Porsche!

Some of you have been able to find some great deals out there, particularly given the info that Spokane5150 provided regarding wholesale prices. Now I am uncertain what to think about the likelihood of buying a nice '05 with low miles under $50k.

Do you guys agree that it is better to buy an older 911 if the idea is to put on a lot of miles?

By the way, Spokane5150, I love the color of your 911. Is it ruby red? They seem to be hard to find.

I paid $37K for mine last September. The car was in showroom condition. 19K miles on it and 4K on the new engine. The deals are out there, but you have to wait for the right car.

Sy308, that is amazing. I guess patience is the most important thing to remember in this process. But I would think that a deal such as yours would get snatched up immediately.

Oh yeah? Well when I bought my car the dealer paid ME $12000! And that was in 2006! Now that was a great deal...

Not to brag or anything...

Something doesn't smell right here. Like most of us, even though I'm perfectly satisfied with my car, I watch the market pretty closely throughout the model range. Has there really been a $5-8K jump in the market for 05 997's? I paid about $43.5 for my 05 (real early build) about 2.5 years ago (about 24K miles, no CPO). Like a previous poster said, I'm feeling pretty good if my "investment" is really appreciating like this thread seems to intimate...keep looking. I think for $50K+ you can be looking at newer cars, but that's just my impression.

Thank you very much for the complement. She is a Ruby Red. I haven't seen any Ruby Red Porsche's in Nashville. I actually had my car in for service today and the service writer told me that there is a Boxter but no 911's that he knows of so I guess it is a unique color.

I think the scary thing about finding a car that is $10k less is that you may be getting a car with major problems if you're not careful. Don't pass up a good deal if it is right but you really need to be careful not to get a car with major body or frame damage or even major engine problems. Retail CPO 2005 911's are going to be expensive at the Dealership. $3-5k of profit plus probably another $3k in CPO extended warranty. Porsche does an extensive evaluation before they provide CPO. If anything is questionable they will more than likely wholesale the car to the secondary market dealers.

911's currently at Manheim Auction:

2005 - 14 911's
2006 - 28 911's
2008 - 69 911's
2009 - 61 911's
2010 - 26 911's

Prices fluctuate on supply and demand. Right now I think the demand is high and there aren't very many 911's out there. Porsche's resale values are really good all the time but now the pickings are slim. There is a total of 307 2005-2012 911's in the USA on Manheim which isn't very many considering "All" the different options and combinations. It is obvious that most of the Dealers are keeping the cars they bring in on trade for retail. More money on a retail if you can turn it in a month.

There is a nice article in Panorama Magazine regarding the prices of Porsche 911's. The article talks about the prcie of vintage 911's and how the values are exploding. I think our cars, in good condition, will plateau at around $35-$40k and stay there for many years then start appreciating like crazy. The 1980's 930 vintage cars bottomed out years ago and are now appreciating. The 930's will be considered good investments with the unique color's bringing the most value. If you got some extra money start scooping up 930's and fill up your stable for about 5-10 years.

Spokane5150, thanks for the pic. Why don't you sell me yours? :-)

Seriously, maybe I should wait awhile in the hope that prices will go down...

Market demand for 997's seems to have gone up since I was looking in 2010/2011... On the low end I recall finding a triple black '05 C2S with 30K miles early last year for $42K asking. Local Private sale. Had numerous options but the owner had the front end resprayed due to fender bender in the parking lot... I wanted something cleaner so moved onto other candidates.

But don't be shy of the higher mileage cars either. Good way to avoid infant mortality issues that some low mileage cars suffer from and get a good price. Better to have a higher mileage car under warranty and CPO then a lower mileage car without any coverage. I went with a Guards Red '08 C2S with 45K highway miles, single owner trade-in to original dealer, full leather, Carrera Classics Wheels, Sport Chrono, PASM, pwr sport adaptive seats with memory, bi-xenon, etc. Clean car - full dealer service records, no accidents, clean DME, good PPI, near 2 yrs left on original warranty plus 2 yrs of CPO when I bought her early last year for $49K out the door. Dealer service reps here always comments on how mechanically clean she is when they service her. Since I purchased the car it's only had to be serviced/repaired twice. Loose steering column originally after the car carrier dropped her off - I believe the carrier contributed to this issue. TPMS sensor replaced recently due to dead battery... all covered under the car's original warranty. All other maintenance has been DIY.
