brake pad change

brake pad change
Just changed the pads for the front wheel for practice.
Thanks for all the DIY instructions, I can't believe how simple and easy it was.
I have one question. How do I tell if I need to replace the rotor? Is it necessary to replace the rotor when changing pads?
Thanks

It is not necessary to change rotors every time you change pads.
Rotors are replaced after they reach a certain width as measured by calipers. I don't know the number, but I think it's minus 2mm from original. Rather than measure, I replace when I notice a lip on the rotor about the thickness of a dime (roughly 1mm per face on the rotor).

Got this chart from 6speed - its for a 996, but it seems like the original manufactured thickness of the rotor can be seen(listed) when you remove the wheels. Since you cannot machine cross drilled rotors, measure the thickness with a micrometer (plenty for under $20) and look for the normal signs to replace like cracking, warping, etc.
You can go digital on the micrometer if you want to spend a little more.
