2006 911 Navigation vs Parking Assist
Looking at a 2006 911 S. One has navigation, one has parking assist but no nav. What is better? Should I go for the nav package, since it costs more?

I had an 06 with Navigation and didn't use it. I bought a Garmin for less than the cost of newer dvds for the car, and it's much easier to use. If the vehicles are in the same condition, and priced the same, go for the park assist.

Get the Nav - there if you need it.
Parking assist is nice on an SUV. The 911 is small and has great visibility - honestly, if you need park assist on a 911 something is off

Actually, the parking assist is a great selling point, as I am blind in one eye and don't have the same depth perception as a normal person. That being said, the car was first sold in August 2005 as a 06 model. Its got 54 thousand miles and listed for $45K. I'm more concerned now about the engine.

Actually, the # of miles is not bad for being a 2006. Porsche engines are made strong and should last a long time. Some use is preferred over not enough use - these cars are made to be driven.

Sounds like the p-assist would benefit you more... I also agree with the views of others re use of a smart phone. Car Nav on an '05 would be very dated compared to a current dedicated GPS or smartphone. If the car is truly an '05 then factor in the cost of the LN Engineering IMS fit. Given a clean DME and PPI you should be fine. $45k seems high unless it's loaded with options.

not quite true, but, well, design has certain flaws and in some cases you may have issues with this motor. no one knows real stats on whose issues but overall consensus is that 997.2 DFI motors are better design, but, if you look at 997.2 cars prices reflect this fact very well.
there is a lot of people in 997.1 cars who drive them hard and every day and never had any issues. some people lost their motors to IMS, broken off rods or cylinder cracks. it is true for all M96/M97 motors in all 996 and 997.1 cars.
06+ motors are better than earlier ones. most likely you will have no issues, but no one can guarantee that. do some research about IMS bearing and decide for yourself.

I'd go with park assist since the Nav. on these cars is ho hum. Pick up a Garmin unit for long trips and be done with it.

Use my navi all the time. I think in June of 2006 Porsche upgraded the IMS but it cannot be fixed without pulling the motor apart. The 05 - mid 06 can be fixed easy and there is an upgrade kit for it. Perhaps it has already been done. If not, then deduct the cost for repair from you offer and get it done. It is a small percentage of IMS problems.
