C4S Tires -- worn or not?
Hi all,
What do you guys say about the wear of this rear tire on my 2007 C4S. How much would you say is left? Both are like this....
It's a Stock Perelli P0, 305x19.

Thanks. Pfaff told me there was 80% left when I got the car 5 mothns and 6k kms ago. I have not tracked the car. There is a pretty significant pulsing at low speeds now and tons of tire noise....

Remember the life span of tires on these cars is not what you would call spectacular. I replaced mine more due to age than actual tread left at 12,000 miles.

Your tire tread looks great in the photo. Tires become louder if the tread wears unevenly, they become quieter if they wear evenly. If you cannot detect uneven wear visually you can check for it by feeling the tread surface with your bare hand. Inspect the inside edge of the tread for exposed steel belts etc. 1st to avoid cutting your hand. Cleaning the tread 1st helps both the visual inspection & the "hands on".

Buy yourself a tyre depth gauge.
My new Super Sports had 10/32" of tread which appears to be faiirly standard. The minimum tread is 2/32". Using this information you should be able to work out a percentage of tread life left and roughly what that represents in miles based on how long it took you to wear them down to their current depth.

Tread depth is only 1 indicator of a tries useful life. The other is the condition of the rubber itself. The Michelin for example has a 5 year life for the rubber and then it turns to a rock.

At 2/32" tread depth on a 305 it might make for an interesting ride in the rain.
I've used 3/32" as a minimum for several years. I believe Tire Rack did a test on minimum tread depth and there was a significant delta in wet performance between 2/32" and 3/32".

looks like you have 3 to 4/32s and should have around 5k of mileage before you need to replace them. if you drive in the rain dont let it get down below 2/32. Im at 2/32s but have been doing track days and enjoy the added grip in the dry.

Sometimes you have to factor in where you live and the time of year into your formula. If you are approaching a winter, for example, there is no need to buy new rubber only to have the car and tires aging in a garage for 4 months. Simply await the Spring for new tires.

For this reason I always re-balance all the wheels at every other oil change.
