Not to be rude or anything, but goddamn, did you have thorns on your fingers or what? how did it ever get to that condition in the first place sir?

I would think that all it take is one sharp fingernail to cause flaking.

Mine look worse, and no I don't have thorns. the problem is once they start to flake, they don't stop. The only way to have this not happen is to not use them. My car is a DD so I touch them a lot.

Well, sir, actually I glue little bits of sandpaper to my fingers every time I drive for better grip on the wheel. Everything else is secondary.

Here is a link to removal on the switches from the face plate. It has nothing - I repeat nothing - to do with the 4 small tabs on each switch. Wish I had found this link a couple hours earlier. Ha!

What do you guys think of using plasti-dip on the buttons with carefully applied masking? No button icons I guess if you go this route, but would be interested to see if anyone has tried.
