997.2 Engine Oil advice...
 

I've had a 914 for a few years, but the 911 is a brand new experience. That said, I have relied on some local contacts for advice.

One suggested that at 1000 miles I have the oil changed and start using synthetic.

What do you think?

Your 997.2 should already be using synthetic oil (Mobil 1 0-40).

Unless you're tracking it hard, I would recommend you follow the yearly oil change schedule Porsche recommends. I have a '09 C4S Cab and I do 2 oil changes per year. Enjoy!

that sounds funny....I gotta learn to drive it to the store before I start "tracking" it.

Some crazy people suggest using dino oil for the initial break-in.

Definitely change oil at first 1000 miles.

After that, IMO change oil once a year or 5000 miles. Porsche used to have an interval of 20,000 , then 15,000 , and maybe it's now down to 12,000 ? Anyway, do 5000 to be safe.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is the OEM fill and it's just fine.

It's not, however, a true synthetic. For that you would have to go to something like Motul 300.

There is a Porsche TSB of all the approved oils that you can get on Renntech (among other places).

The important thing is not the brand of oil, it's keeping the level correct, warming it up to boil off water, and changing it often enough.

Re grade 5 synthetic oils. (Mobil is grade 4). Please note that Motul 300v is not intended for long term fills. It is intended for short term racing use and not current dealer recommended intervals, annual oil changes, etc. due to the nature of the lubricant/additive package. Grade 5 Motul for street use and approved by Porsche is currently packaged as 8100 x-cess or more recent 8100 x-clean. These come in 5-40 for current Porsches. Redline is the other G5 but I don't see an approval from Porsche. Started using Motul in last fill.

I like Motul. Good oils.
On M1 0W40 I get slightly less oil pressure when hot, more engine noise and some (but not much) oil consumption that I don't see on 5W40 grades.
I recently used CI-4/SL M1 TDT with higher Ph and Zn levels (pre SM specs) and 4.1 HTHS (if I am correct).
The engine is soooo smooth. Like silk. Real joy to drive. Love it.
When I run out of my current TDT stock I will start using Red Line 10W40.
My 2 Cents. YMMV.

I also change oil very 6 months regardless of mileage incl. some storage time during winter months.

Yep. Every 6 mths. Works out to about 3K miles for me. Cheap insurance. Also check out last months Excellence for oil discussion if you haven't seen it. He likes the G5 oils over the M1.

But you can stick with 10k Mi / 1 year oil changes and be just fine if you just drive the car in traffic, and for that the factory fill synthetic Mobil oils are just fine too.

The oil I've found that are SL, A3/B3 or A3/B4 with good ratings are:

• Motul 8100
• Castrol VW 505.01 5W40
• Liqui Moly 5W40
• Total 5W40

I've ran Liqui Moly and it's been great, and had Motul in my Audi/VW and it was by far the BEST OIL I've ever used! Unfortunately, the old Motul 5W40 is changed a bit, but still the new one is one of the best. Next up, I might try Total.

Read your owners manual...it has all the oil info right there at your finger tips.

The car comes from the factory with Mobil 1 0w40. That is all I've been using my my 997S cars since my 1st one in 2005. I track mine regularly with no oil issues at all. Synth oils on Porsche's approved list that meets 0w40 or 5w40 will work.

Since I track my car a lot I change my oil after ever 3 track events. If I was just street driving I'd change the oil ever 10,000 miles or at least once ever year if I did not meet 10,000 miles

People say they like brand X over brand Y, for instance Motul over Mobile 1.
Like it better how? price wise? Engine runs cooler? or something else?
Sitting in my car and listening to the motor I certainly cannot tell which oil is better.

My car is CPO'd so I'm sticking with what Porsche recommends for now, later I may try something else and was just wondering why people would choose one oil over the other.

I like to change oil every 5k/6m0. just city/highway mixed driving, but can't imagine annual oil change. just me
