Ok boys (and girls) I just went through every page of this thread and documented the year and miles of each reported IMS failure. Took me about an hour. I am currently looking for a 997 so was interested in this data. Since there is really no way to use the actual votes to document the needed data, going through the thread was the only other option. I am sure some people voted but did not post in the thread. There may even be people that posted in the thread but did not vote. I only recorded failures on 997 cars. A few people reported Caymans and Boxters but I did not record those even though engines were similar. If someone said his friend had a failure I did not record that either. Remember like everything else on the internet some of this data may not be accurate. Some IMS failures may have actually been other issues that just appeared to be an IMS and some reports may have been trolls. It was not always clear if the 05 failures were early or late builds so I was not able to break that down by build date. I put the 06 or later data at the end of the list.

Reported IMS failures in the thread to date:
Year Mileage Post number
05 36k 24
05 40k 80

Interesting. So only 3 that were not '05 cars and 1 of those was a track failure. Also, I'm curious if you counted reports from people that only had 1 or 2 posts, as I would also eliminate these. Did you capture data whether they were S or non-S cars as there was a rumor that non-S cars received more of the smaller bearings than the S Cars did.

Good points Pete but I did not eliminate data due to post count and did not break down the S or non S cars. Many of the posts were incomplete which made further data points less reliable. I am also slightly hung over so I may have missed a one or two.

This is excellent summary data! Thanks for posting.

Any chance you can go back through your notes and add post numbers to each failure data point? That way we can all go back and quickly find the stories behind each in this thread.

Thanks again!

Excellent that you did this! Thank you! I reached out and I think another member did to at least one of the non 05's. It was the guy's first post and he never responded to the inquiries. This seemed strange to me as if I lost my engine, I would be searching for answers, but we are all different.

When you run through the list, would you please be so awesome as to jot down the post number of the non '05's? I ask this only because, I feel they may potentially have been forum trolls.

Ok due to several requests I went back and edited my original post and added the post number for each data point and also if the original poster had a very low post count.

Interesting the '06 on page 29, post 432 said the following in a subsequent post when asked if it had a newer bearing:

"Never really asked to be honest, I was quoted for the newer design IMS when it was replaced. I think the manufacture date of the vehicle is a 2005."

The '07 I doubted because he never responded to other posts. And other post '05 was said to be track related. Seems safe to summize there should be need to be concerned with the subsequent larger bearing IMS...

For all intents and purposes, all '06+ cars have the newer bearings. The changeover occured in Feb-Mar-April of 2005, while they were still producing the MY05 cars. MY06 production started in in the fall of '05, I believe. So it is not rare for an MY06 car to have a manufacture date in '05 - the end of '05.
