2007 Cayman S here..

145,000 miles..

My limited research shows my car has a M97.21 engine.
Given that its a 2007, is it safe to assume that I have the revised bearing?

Any input is greatly appreciated

Thank you

Assuming your engine is original, it should have the larger/revised bearing.

Post in the 996 forum. Keep up the regular oil changes. Are you doing any oil analysis?

Default 2006 C2 No issues

24,000 miles. Larger bearing I believe. Was built in October 2005. I looked at this thread a lot before buying. Probably a perfect candidate for failure if easy driving garage queens are most prone. We'll see what happens.

Default 2005 C2 IMS failure 20,000 miles

The 2005 911 Carrera I bought in December 2016 had an IMS failure at 20,000 miles. Porsche installed a new replacement engine under warentee with an upgraded IMS bearing. Car has 35,000 miles on the replacement 3.6L.

I just bought my '05 a month ago. It had 28K miles at the time and the previous owner replaced the bearing with an LN this past April as a preventative maintenance measure. The original one looked great according to the tech I talked to who replaced it.

I didn't know you could replace an 05 IMSB that easy?

Glad the old one was in good shape.

He was doing other work, so it was accessible.

I'm not sure. The line items in the maintenance records for the brand new 3.6L replaced by a Porsche dealer at no charge under warranty says "customer supplied IMSB installed". I'm going to monitor the health of the oil as a precaution.

Sorry, but take it from somebody that had a failure just 1,200 miles after I changed my oil (and of course I cut the filter open, and no metal)...if the failure's going to happen it's going to happen. Plus, three years before I installed the magnetic drain plug, and the LN spin-on oil filter...and still it failed. Since then I've had the engine rebuilt by Jake Raby and had him install the IMS Solution. I complained to Jake about having purchased the drain plug and spin on filter, telling him I felt like those items didn't do anything. He stated, and I hope I get this correct, that..."having the spin-on filter probably saved me $5,000! He said the way the stock filter's set-up is that the metal debris from the failed bearing sits in the bottom of the cartridge and when the car is started up cold all the debris is pumped directly into the engine, by-passing the filter. However, with the spin on filter, the debris is caught in the filter because the filter's by-pass is on the bottom...thus capturing the debris.
