DIY - Refurbishing Door sill/scuff plate
#31
I also tried this after I bought my 07 turbo...the previous owner did a number on it. I am going to try to tackle the outter sills...but can't figure out for the life of me how to remove those...

I use a scotch brite pad and work in a straight line from front to back. Then I put some wheel protect polish on a rag working in the same direction. This process brightens up the door sill and works great.

This is great write up.
I've seen this type repair on Trucks TV show on Speed a few weekends ago and was actually going to attempt this myself. I went to Autozone to buy the paint but couldn't figure out if I needed a flat or semi-gloss so this DIY write up is perfect. The only thing I might recommend is lightly sanding and deep scratches out and washing with TSP real well to get all the grease and dirt off the plastic. I think taking a Scotch pad to rough up the plastic would hurt. The Trucks guy highly recommended proper cleaning so the paint sticks well.
I'm going to try this. The only downside is that it looks like crap and I'll have to buy new parts which I was going to do anyway.
I tried it...it looks like crap....I ordered new sills from Suncoastparts.com today. I didn't like the texture and it doesn't look stock to me. I'd rather spend the $250 and buy new.

Great write-up, I have a 2002 996, and have the exact same problem. Went down to Ace and got a can for $5.50 and will do the touch-up tomorrow.
Thanks

Here's another paint option:

Goes on even, dries fast, doesn't run - really amazing stuff. And once it's cured it doesn't chip or flake off. I've been using this for years on plastic, metal, and wood and have always been surprised at the results.

I ordered 4 more cans a couple of weeks ago from SJ Discount Tools but they haven't shown up yet. Waiting for them to get back to me as to why (probably restrictions for shipping to Kalifornia, so I'll likely have to send to a relative out of state and have them forward to me). So sad what happens when the freaks take over.....

So I had a bit different outcome
So my experience with flat black lacquer is as shown. I cleaned off the piece, and then gave it 2 light coats. What I got is a significant orange peal and blotchy coverage.
