It loves to be driven hard and put away wet
 

My 997 is mostly a weekend warrior and occasionally gets driven on long road trips and a random day or two to the office. My "commuter" is the Prius. The Prius has been in for service and I haven't been able to pick it up for a few days, so the 997 has been the daily driver this week. It's been raining the last few days in the Bay Area, and I usually drive home after traffic has abated so I have been able to stretch her legs a little. It continues to amaze me how much traction and stability she has in the wet. For some reason I feel more confident driving the 911 hard in the rain (C2S) than I did my old Audi A4. Maybe a false sense of security, but man I just love these cars.....they do everything so well. I really pity those 911s that sit as garage queens and when they do get driven, they're not allowed in the rain or near red line.
The Prius is about to get sold as I now have access to a company car. I'll be getting a 3 series as the commuter. I used to have a few BMWs (the e39 M5 still holds a special place in my heart), and I'm looking forwards to that nimble feeling only a 3 series can provide in the world of luxury sport sedans.
Sorry this isn't a post with much substance, but sometimes I drive the 911 and it's like discovering how awesome it is for the first time again.

The 997 does extremely well in the rain--as do all 911s. Many, unfortunately, never dare to drive their Porsches in the rain--they are missing a lot.

Are you comparing a 911 to a Prius? Are you ?!? :banghead:

Ha, I live in the bay area as well and have driven mine to the office the last few days to. I've ben putting in the hours and with the rain it's just easier than commuting on the train. If you see a GT Silver 997S waving at cha... it's me.

It really BAFFLES ME WHY people don't drive their Porsches in the wet?

I live in Vancouver and basically you have NO OPTION but to drive in the rain and it's absolutely amazing. Its my daily and I drive it in dry, rain, and snow (with winters) and it's fantastic! I may understand people not wanting to drive in snow, but rain?! come on!!!

I agree, a Porsche is my only car. In the summer people say, "Do you drive that in the winter?" and then laugh. I tell them I do and I've never gotten stuck once in it. Our cars are not delicate antiques crafted of fragile materials, they're well engineered machines designed for year round use.

To each their own, but I don't understand the point of having a 60-200k dollar car only to drive it in perfect conditions 1,000 miles a year.

I drive periodically when the CalTrain commute doesn't line up with my schedule.
If you seem a pavement-colored cabrio buzzing down 280 with the top down in 50 degree weather, that's me. Honk and wave and I'll do the same!

I don't know, Dan. My modern Porsches have all done really well in the rain, but my '87 Carrera is more than a handful in the wet.

Fortunately, I was able to do a DE in that car in the rain and learned how to control it properly. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge on the twisties in the rain.

Just curious but aren't tires going to influence this? My 911 on Bridgestone REXXXX's handles fine in the rain but the PS2's, well, running over a wet spot in the road on those could cause the car to shimmy (but they were excellent in the dry). I don't know, maybe I'm just a crappy driver.

I've never been opposed to driving any of my cars in the rain. This is the first year I've driven my 911 in snow, though. With a C4S on winter tires, it's much like driving in the dry! With all the electronic nannies we have on our cars, I can't understand why anyone would be "afraid" to drive in the rain. For those that are "protecting" them, it's a commodity... a depreciating commodity. Just drive it!

Around here you can't see out of the side streets because of all the snow. There are accidents all day every day. I'd be beside myself if I were to wreck my 997 due to some inconsiderate *&$%% driving with his brain unattached.

In winter driving the greatest threat is from others thinking that they can drive in that stuff--not from your 997.

I disagree. I got PS2s and they're pretty worn out and they are fine with no issues in Pacific Northwest rain... one thing I admit is that PS2 need to heat up a bit for good traction, dry or rain.
