Well,I've had a lot of answers to my question. My conclusion is we should drive what we like best. However, even though I bought a MT, I believe PDK is superior technology and the way of the future.
Did I make a mistake? No. My DD is 11 E350 4M (typical old man's car), and the 997 C2S is a toy car that mostly sits in my garage but I feel elated every time I drive it. My wife fumes every time she looks at it and keeps telling me that people that buy such useless cars must hate their money.

Or at least just shake your head in utter amazement at some of the thoughts folks type and post. This thread has reached that lofty rennlist status of becoming irrevalant.

I found most of the discussion to be interesting - sometimes enlightening - helps connect the dots between smoke and no smoke.

I like both transmissions and really don't have a horse in the race. I have PDK now, but as they say, "I was looking for a car when I found this one." Just a car, not a religion.

Unless a thread is OT, overtly political, bigoted, or in some other way offensive and inappropriate, why would someone take the time to post that it makes them sick or that they don't like having to read it? Simple solution: just don't click on it.

That must be one level above the dreaded irrelevant.

unlikely. as good as these automatics are, I think the manuals will always be available - especially the gated shifters of the F-car and Lambos

Ferrari decided to NOT make a manual available on its newest, the 458 Italia. It might stand to reason that future Ferraris will follow the same trend.

What's not to like (except the weight?, it's a 66 lb penalty). On the track, I heel and toe just fine now. But, I am not always perfect, and I believe I could brake better if I was not heel and toeing. Plus the protection against overrev's - well, to me, it's workload reduction that allows for better lap times.

I drove a paddle shift car at the track recently (radical SR-3), and the ability to get perfect downshifts EVERY TIME under maximum braking allowed me to brake later and harder.
If it would have been available for my GT-3, I would have ordered it.

One question though - what happens in a spin, does the clutch engage automatically to protect the drive train?

That's a really good question. Looking through the technical info I have on the PDK I can't find a specific answer. But there are many parameters monitored by the PDK system:

The control unit receives information about the driver request, which includes the following:
• Selector-lever position
• Sport button and/or Sport Plus button
• Accelerator pedal position
• Brake signal
In addition, the operating state of the vehicle is also included:
• Wheel speeds
• Vehicle speed
• Road resistance
• Axial and lateral acceleration
• Altitude factor
• Engine and transmission speed
• Engine and transmission temperature
These input values are processed in the driving software and the driver request is executed, depending on the shift program and driver type detection.

Also generally when the brake is applied and the vehicle is stationary the clutch is opened, except for minor slippage to allow crawling. In combination with all of the above inputs, I think PDK is programmed so that the clutch opens if sensors detect the vehicle is in a spin with the brakes on. I have spun my car a couple of times while autoXing and the engine does not stall, which I think is a good indication.

Yep, when the GT3 gets PDK (it will) the beggining of the end is nigh...
