I had a 1972 911 S. I did not drive it in the rain.
Those cars rust.
In fact, I got so tired of worrying about the rain that I sold that car and bought my 997. I drive it in the rain. Except nasty thunderstorms that might produce hail.

Nice avatar PHX 911! Looks like a Crotalus scutulatus (Mojave rattlesnake). Particularly foul tempered animal - we had one in our lab that was nothing short of one of the most difficult snakes I've ever had to deal with.

Oh, and I drive all the time in the rain.

It's just a car... It's actually the most stable car in the rain I've ever owned. 125 MPH in the pouring rain and high winds at Watkins Glen. Rock chips, dirt, etc. -- no problem, it's a car that's meant to be driven. I guess my 1st Porsche got babied and this one is driven. Not at all neglected, well cared for, detailed often, but fully enjoyed.

Its partly because I hate to get it dirty and I am generally too busy to find time to wash cars ( I own 9 of them). Also I treat it as a classic car like my others so it gets the same baby treatment.

Am I being too careful with my 997 or do many of you do / think the same?

It rains a lot in Ireland so obviously this means limited use.

Some people are inclined to ask silly questions - this is one of those questions.

My C2 with PS2s handles very well in the rain. That said, if I know it's going to rain I generally leave it at home if for no other reason that I don't want to be tempted to drive it agressively on wet pavement.

Not in Houston! With the humidity here, especially after a good shower, and the need for aircon; I get lots of condensation on the outside lower half of my windscreen. Very annoying...

Careful with the sun too. All that UV will damage the paint. And I never drive in the dark. I keep it in the garage except for those 10 minutes each day of twilight. Unless it is raining. Tires might get wet. And I don't go fast, cause I would have to brake, and that brake dust will etch the wheel wells.

And what the hell is that red exclamation point on my dashboard!!!11!

Hey, 237 miles and counting. Should get her through the break in period by 2015.

Are you serious? It's a CAR. A special one maybe, but get real. Life is short--enjoy it as often as possible.

NO, never.
rain water will melt the car.
sunlight will vaporize the car.
wind will blow the paint right off.

Shoot, not only do I drive my Boxster S in the rain, I often do it with the top down!

BTW, I think a better question would be: What do threads like this one and "Waxing Your 997--Do You Do It Yourself?" say about many Porsche owners?

Does anyone live here in Oklahoma besides me? Do you know what happens on those overcast days?!

So for me here in the USA too risky. Back in Germany I'd drive my car whenever...even in the winter but then again those were better times all around!

Not me. I drive my Range Rover in the rain, not because of being afraid of getting the Porsche wet, but as a defense for the utterly insane drivers in Houston. They seem to all drive Suburbans with their lights off, going 70 in a downpour! Plus if it floods, it won't matter, and it does flood in Houston. Not that I've never driven them in rain, but I prefer the SUV when it rains hard.
